Bryson DeChambeau joined Tiger Woods as one of the few golfers who entered the PGA Tour having won both the NCAA and U.S. Amateur titles in the same year. But that is not where the similarities between the two golfers end. DeChambeau recently revealed another uncanny resemblance between his initial journey and that of the 82-time PGA Tour winner.

The captain of Crushers GC shared the inspiration behind his golfing journey and how his father helped him move away from a habit that was similar to that of Tiger Woods’ early golfing days.

Bryson DeChambeau recently became the third guest on the Good Good Podcast and revealed many insights from his life. The 2020 U.S. Open winner started with his introduction to golf. He narrated that it was his father, John DeChambeau, who nudged him towards the sport. The golfer revealed that his father was a “great amateur” player and had triumphed in many city championships.

Amongst many things, the one-time major winner revealed the tale behind his left-hand swing. He said, “I started swinging left-handed much. Very similar to what Tiger Woods did with his dad.” DeCheambeau’s story is similar to that of Woods who started as a leftie before switching to his right hand for swinging. Tiger’s father, Earl Woods Sr., was also a leftie which could indicate that his natural handedness was passed onto Tiger who watched him play. Woods’ late father revealed how he started using his left hand for swing early in his career and found it much easier. But his father realized that his son had to switch to the right to become a better player, which he did.

Similar to that, De Cheambeau used to witness his father playing from the front, and it would appear that he was swinging left-handed. However, soon after, his father taught him better. He explained, “I grew up swinging it left-handed initially, for, like, the first couple of days. And then my dad turned me around, and I started hitting the right hand, and I just became better with the right hand.” While Woods would later switch to the right and use his left occasionally, DeCheambeau remains an ambidextrous golfer and can hit well from both sides of the club.

In the podcast, he recounted his initial days of playing golf and said, “I started grabbing a golf club when I was as young as I could start walking pretty much.” DeChambeau has been playing golf since he was a preteen and shares similarities with Woods dating back to days before he got into pro golf. The two golfers since then enjoyed a healthy relationship before DeChambeau’s move to LIV Golf soured the bond.

The fractured friendship between Woods and DeChambeau

DeChambeau first met Tiger Woods in 2018 during a practice round at Torry Pines. For DeChambeau it was meeting his childhood idol that made him more nervous than anything in his golfing career. He described the meeting as by “far the coolest, most nerve-racking experience.” Later that year, their relationship blossomed as Woods backed Bryson DeChambeau to lead Team USA’s charge against Europe in Paris.

Woods continued to lend his support to DeChambeau as the two enjoyed a good bond. But they hit a roadblock in 2o22 after DeChambeau defected to LIV Golf. Earlier, this year, the 30-year-old revealed that Woods cut him off after he signed for LIV in 2022. Woods even ghosted his old pal after he wished the iconic golfer a happy 47th birthday.

Speaking at LIV Golf Orlando, DeChambeau was asked if any PGA players have cut him off since his $125 million LIV move. He noted, “Yeah, I’m not going to throw anyone under the bus.“He’s been a great friend. I texted him on his birthday. It is what it is”. “He has his viewpoints on it and thinks we’re potentially hurting his record. If anything, nobody is ever going to touch his record.”

But the golfer still talks highly of Woods and even found his TGL concept “cool.”His recent revelation does add another layer to their dynamic.
