Maintaining a consistent performance on the PGA Tour is not an easy task. Every season brings with itself new challenges that even experienced golfers find hard to cope with.

And this season has proved to be very testing for a PGA Tour pro who despite his hurricane efforts went on a very long spree of missing many consecutive cuts and ultimately prize money as well. Let’s learn about the sad ordeal of this PGA Tour entity.

Six months of no pay is a long drought for anyone. And that is what PGA Tour Pro Troy Merritt had to go through. This season he failed the cut at nine consecutive events and after a gap he again missed five consecutive cuts. Despite his best attempts, Troy failed at big events like Charles Schwab Challenge, the Memorial Tournament, Travelers Championship, and others.

To sum it up total out of the 23 events that he entered he has missed 16 cuts. This bad omen ended last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he finished on T17. This comes as quite a shock especially after he gave some of his best performances in the 2021-2022 season.

Going through such a catastrophic phase in an athletic career, where one is judged highly based on their performance is not easy. Recently on Twitter, Merritt was asked about how he was dealing with this kind of adversity. The PGA Tour Pro opened up on how it felt like, “It’s a new experience. And very difficult to deal with, when your putter has been the best part of your game your whole life, and you develop the yips.” According to Merritt, he has had Yips which he called very real. “I always thought they were a myth, but THEY ARE REAL!! Been battling hard to figure out a way to get through them. Still time”.

Troy Merritt speaks about techniques to improve his game

Speaking further about what measures he has taken to improve this track, Merritt said there has been a lot of tweaking and changing in his equipment and routine. He is going back to making it simple which has also provided him with positive strokes. After Merritt turned pro in 2008, he had 3 professional wins. His first win was on the Nationwide Tour at the Mexico Open. On the PGA tour, he has won twice. The first time was in 2015 at the Quicken Loans National, and the second victory came in 2018 at the Barbasol Championship.

Merritt is currently playing at the John Deere Classic event at the TPC DeereRun golf course. Till the second round yesterday he was faring well and even made birdie on the par-4 4th hole. With two more rounds remaining, it will be worth seeing if he could change his past track and improve his game.
