Safe to say, Jim Furyk’s picks for the Presidents Cup caught many by surprise. He picked Keegan Bradley for the team, likely because of the BMW Championship victory. However, a few big names were missing, whereas some others made it to the team. Justin Thomas was one of those on the wrong side.
He is ‘bummed,’ no wonder. Nevertheless, like Bryson DeChambeau during the Olympics, Thomas extends his full support to the team that won’t have his name. Thomas offered one of the most memorable Presidents Cup moments in 2019. Who can forget the rip-roaring, chest-thumping celebration with Tiger Woods at Melbourne, right?
The two-time major champion has been a staple at the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup. His record across the two biennial events stands at 18-7-4. Moreover, JT’s season has been better than it was in 2023. Unlike last year, Thomas qualified for the Tour Championship and finished this season at 14th in the FedEx Cup standings, vis-à-vis 71 last year.

Thomas wrote in a lengthy Instagram post, “I’m obviously very bummed to not be joining the boys in Canada for @presidentscup, but completely understanding. Jim has put together a great team.” But there were more deserving candidates than him. At least, that’s what Furyk felt.

Interestingly, Thomas said only a few days back, “There are so many guys that are deserving. There’ll be three, four guys that don’t get picked that are very deserving whether they’re here or not.” So, Thomas does understand Furyk’s tough call. His eyes will be glued to the TV on September 26. His mind will be on Montreal.

Justin Thomas promised he would take that as an inspiration to ‘not miss a team event again’. That will depend on how well his 2025 goes, of course. Even though his season ended on a disappointing note, Thomas has one thing to look forward to this fall.

The 15-time PGA Tour winner wrote in the same post, “It will be nice to have some time to work on things, foundation event, some R&R, and even become a dad at the end of November! … Thanks to everybody for countless support and kind words as I always appreciate it. That’s enough of me getting in my feels for today.”
Thomas will join Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns as the new dads on the Tour. Congratulations on the news that followed. Michelle Wie West commented, “Can’t wait to meet this little nugget.” So, Justin Thomas has plenty to look forward to and work on—golf skills and dad skills—in the off-season.
