Jay Monahan's absence at the Olympics—Is the PGA Tour losing its grip to LIV Golf?

It’s going to be a hectic week at the Olympics for everyone. This is more so the case for the seven LIV Golf Pros who will be teeing it up at Le Golf National in Guyancourt. Why, you might ask. Well, they will be fresh off from the Saudi-backed league’s 11th event in the UK that ended on August 28.

But they don’t need to worry too much, for there will be ample support awaiting them off the course, in the form of none other than Greg Norman. The Australian shark shared a post on Instagram that included a selfie of him overlooking the gymnastics event from the stands of the stadium.

He posted the same with the caption, “Watching perfection on the floor before watching perfection with @livgolf_league boys playing @olympics @paris2024 golf tomorrow.” Norman seems to be truly supportive of his boys at the quadrennial games.

A total of seven LIV golfers will be part of the 60 players representing 32 countries that are on the field at Le Golf National. They include the likes of Abraham Ancer from Mexico, Adrian Meronk from Poland, Joaquin Niemann from Chile, Carlos Ortiz from Mexico, Mito Pereira from Chile, David Puig, and Jon Rahm from Spain.

Coming back to the post shared by Norman, well, suffice it to say, it did rake in a whole lot of positive responses from the fans in the community. But one question stood out: where was Jay Monahan?

Greg Norman’s presence at Olympics push fans to call out Jay Monahan

What’s your perspective on:

Jay Monahan's absence at the Olympics—Is the PGA Tour losing its grip to LIV Golf?

Have an interesting take?

“Nice to have support from the boss man. Where’s Jay?” asked a fan as they inquired about the Commissioner of the PGA Tour. The fact that the CEO of LIV Golf was there to support his seven athletes while Monahan not doing the same despite the majority in the field being PGA Tour Pros did not sit well with the follower. Moreover, not being in Paris, even though the American men’s golf team boasts the best chances at the quadrennial event, might have added fuel to the fire. Another user commented, “Doubt the PGA or DP Tour CEOs will be out watching their players!! Go, Greg!”

The CEO of LIV Golf, through 2024, had been a constant presence at several of the major championships. He was spotted encouraging his players and interacting with his fans at Augusta National during the Masters week and was also spotted at Royal Troon during the Open Championship. Although he entered the former major with a ticket that he himself bought, the latter he joined as a former Open Champion. His presence at the prestigious events did not go unnoticed for a couple of fans pointed out the same, “bossman checkin up on his boys,” and “Great support Mr. Norman, I’m sure the boys will appreciate it.”

LIV Golf has seen a steady rise in its viewership worldwide. What’s more, the league pushing its streaming efforts this season also seems to have contributed to the same. The PIF-funded circuit was able to rake in a total of 3.51 million viewers for its Mayakoba event while garnering 3.03 million for the Las Vegas one. Couple that with his actions and a fan couldn’t help but comment, “Yes sirrr!!! Do it @shark_gregnorman staple that name worldwide.”

Well, Greg Norman does seem pretty supportive of his golfers in the league. But that brings us to the next question; will a LIV golfer claim the medal this time around or will a PGA Tour Pro do it? What do you think?
