Will Rory McIlroy's TaylorMade gear give him the edge to dominate at the Paris Olympics?

“It would be the achievement, certainly of the year,” divulged a hopeful Rory McIlroy while alluding to the 2024 Olympics. The golfer had failed to clinch the win back at the 2024 U.S. Open despite being so close and followed it with a missed cut at Royal Troon.

With so many disappointments in the major, it would make perfect sense for the Northern Irishman to aim for an Olympic medal. And for that exact reason, he seems to have changed a bit of the equipment in his bags.

The 35-year-old had been dependent on his partner’s clubs, the TaylorMade Spider X Hydro Blast attached to the SuperStroke Pistol Tour, for his putters. However, reports from GolfWRX indicate he changed his club back to a Scotty Cameron putter (the 0009M) with a chromatic bronze finish on the head. Interestingly, McIlroy used to carry the Scotty Cameron T-5.5 Proto putter before the 2023 Ryder Cup.

The 4-time major champ, meanwhile, would be using the same TaylorMade Qi10 driver lofted at 9 degrees to tee off his TaylorMade 2024 TP5x balls ($52.99). The club, attached to a Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft, is currently priced at $549.99 and is specifically designed to help reduce bad swings while providing a better chance of ball contact.

Rory McIlroy had been using the mini driver in place of his 3-woods since his Masters downfall. However, reports indicate he is currently making use of the TaylorMade Qi10 fairway lofted at 15 degrees for his 3-woods while turning to the same with an 18-degree loft for his 5-woods. The two clubs are, at the moment, priced at $319.99, with the latter boasting an ultra-high MOI construction for better shot-making.

When it comes to his irons, the Northern Irishman turns to the TaylorMade Proto for his 4-irons while depending on the TaylorMade Rors Proto (Project X 7.0 shaft) for his 5-irons to 9-irons and pitching wedges. The athlete turned to the TaylorMade Proto instead of his P·760 4-iron ($1,399.99) ahead of the Valero Texas Open, following which he has been using it till now.

Will Rory McIlroy's TaylorMade gear give him the edge to dominate at the Paris Olympics?

Have an interesting take?

The golfer hasn’t made many changes to his wedges. He still uses the TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 for his pitching wedges (46-09SB, 50-09SB, 54-11SB). But when it comes to his 58-K, McIlroy turns to Titleist Vokey Design WedgeWorks. Both clubs are attached to the Project X 6.5 shaft, with the former being marked at $179.99.

The 35-year-old McIlroy will surely look to clinch a podium finish, if not a gold medal, at the Olympic Games in the men’s event. He was spotted hopeful for the same while mentioning, “It would probably be one of, if not the biggest in my career for the last [decade].” Maybe this is what it would take for the athlete to forget the major-less 10 years he had since his 2014 win. Anyhow, many will be keeping their eyes on the golfer.
