Is Jordan Spieth's career on a downward spiral, or can he bounce back from these repeated failures?

All’s not well for Jordan Spieth, and it has been this way for a while. The 3-time major winner and the former world no. 1 is having trouble making the cut on the PGA Tour. It’s a reality that fans have been overlooking for a while now. But following the Wyndham Championship’s disastrous gameplay from Spieth, they are opening up about their true feelings, and they are not giving him a free pass because of his withstanding wrist injury.

At the Wyndham Championship this week, Spieth finished with a 2-under par after two rounds. The cutline of the weather-ridden event was 4 under. Spieth shot 67, and 71 on the first two days of the competition, and four bogeys in the second round ultimately led to a missed cut, once again. Notably, the PGA Tour pro had a great beginning this season.

In the very first event, The Sentry, at Kapalua Plantation Course, Spieth finished as the second runner-up. Next month, at the Phoenix Open, he was still in the top 10. However, these were followed by disqualification at Genesis, missed cuts at events to follow, and dropping further down on the list. All of these consequences other than signing the wrong scorecard can be because of his injury.

At the RBC Heritage this season, Spieth somehow jammed his left wrist. But it was simply not a jam. It has ultimately resulted in his ECU tendon popping out. The golfer persevered through the pain, played the event, and finished at T39. He claimed that the pain as well as the phenomenon are recurring and affect his play a great deal.

He revealed to the PGA Tour, “Because my (wrist) sheath is torn, it doesn’t really hold (the tendon) in as well,” Spieth said. ”It’s one of those things, like it’s not affecting speed or anything like that. It’s just managing it. So today, it was just, with the tape, the way it’s on, that it’s going to inhibit (the tendon’s) ability to create any issues.”

This injury that has been bothering him this season came up last year, and the golfer is now planning to undergo surgery in the off-season. He has been in conversations with a few doctors.  Spieth has been missing cuts and subjected to poor play even now. Had Spieth not been injury-curse, he could have maybe had a better finish at the season’s final regular event, but fans do not care about his injury, as they had a lot to say about his poor performance at the Wyndham Championship.

The golf community does not believe in the injury excuse

Is Jordan Spieth's career on a downward spiral, or can he bounce back from these repeated failures?

One of the fans stated, “Jordan, get a grip on your emotions. You make $MILLIONS playing a great game. Digging your foot into the fairway after you hit a shot 20ft from the pin, teaches the kids who admire you how to pout and tear up the golf course when they don’t get their way!” The golfer has amassed $62,701,370 from the PGA Tour, and it is a testament to his skills. This comment shows that instead of pouting when something goes wrong, Spieth should keep in mind that he is being watched by many aspiring golfers.

Another fan said out loud their hopelessness with Spieth. They stated, “You mean one and done. He won’t be playing many signature events next year. Maybe this is the wake-up call he needs like in 2020 when he missed the presidents cups.” In 2019, Jordan Spieth was not picked by Tiger Woods to participate in the team at the Presidents Cup. However, when several other players dropped out, even then, Spieth could not find himself among the top 13 American players to play in the tournament. Instead of putting away his motivation, Spieth was fired up for a greater comeback. The fans too wish that this season’s bad play will help the golf star reclaim renewed motivation.

“Is the wrist actually hurting his play or is he just playing bad and now blaming it for simply playing bad golf? Is he going to be good once he has some sort of surgery on it? Seems like he’s playing bad golf, first and foremost,” said another fan. According to them, Spieth has been using the injury tag only as an excuse. In reality, the golfer might have truly downgraded his play, hence he missed 7 cuts in 2024. They questioned whether surgery would help Spieth get back to his usual fierce play era. Yet, the idea did not seem quite convincing to many.

Someone else wrote, “Sadly doesn’t deserve his card. Amateurs are better. He has become a less than Korn ferry tour player.” Calling Spieth less than amateurs and Korn Ferry Tour players, he prodded on the superiority of the PGA Tour. Yet, it is the same PGA Tour where Jordan Spieth has earned 13 titles. Three of them were major honors. Although his win rate has fallen considerably, the golfer had seven top-10 finishes even last year. This year too, amidst missing cuts and ranking over T-25, the golfer did well in a few events.

Another fan directly blamed Spieth for getting distracted. They said,“@JordanSpieth Back when you didn’t have many coaches and sponsor commitments you played your best golf. Now you have too many distractions that take away your focus on the course. Read Jack Nicklaus book and who he talks about COURSE MANAGEMENT. Do something!” Soon after Spieth turned pro, he started getting sponsorships, which ended up having long-term partnerships with him. Although not new to sponsors, at the moment Spieth has many. This includes: Under Armour, NetJets, Perfect Sense, AT&T, Titleist, Wheaties, and SuperStroke. And the fans believe that, with his growing commitments, his performance has been dropping.
