A recent development has sparked interest among golf enthusiasts. The appointment of a new commentator has been met with varying reactions, leaving many to wonder if the chosen individual is up to the task. As the golf world continues to evolve, the need for informed and engaging commentary has never been more pressing.
Brandel Chamblee, a Golf Channel analyst, has been a vocal critic of LIV Golf, and his latest comments on the No Laying Up Podcast are no exception. Chamblee aimed for the circuit’s format, arguing that considering the billions of dollars invested by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the product offered by LIV Golf was not worthwhile. He criticized the format, saying it was an “insult to the integrity of the competition” and that the shotgun start element disregarded the expertise that went into golf course design. Chamblee also expressed his disdain for the source of LIV Golf’s investment, given Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, describing the competition as “laughable”.
Despite Chamblee’s strong opinions, Kevin Kisner has emerged as a better choice for the golf commentator role than the LIV Golf critic. While Kisner’s appointment has been met with a lukewarm response, many acknowledge that he was likely the best option available. As the hosts on the latest episode of No Laying Up noted, “I think in hindsight, probably doing it sporadically both hurt and helped them… it kept him fresh, but also probably hurt him because he’s not just diving in head-first and able to find his voice.” However, Kisner’s past behavior has raised concerns about his willingness to speak truth to power.

After making a bold statement about the PGA Tour, he quickly backpedaled, claiming he was “just asking the question.” This lack of conviction is unsettling, and critics worry that Kisner may not be able to provide the kind of honest commentary that golf fans crave. While some acknowledge that he was likely the best option available, others have raised concerns about his willingness to speak truth to power. Kisner’s past behavior has been scrutinized, with some questioning his ability to provide balanced and honest commentary.

As the hosts on No Laying Up pointed out, “The fiery take stuff is the kind of thing that worries me the most… that he won’t actually be honest because he’s out there wanting to still be buds with the people.” This concern is valid, especially when compared to the likes of Johnny Miller, who was unapologetically honest in his commentary, even if it meant ruffling a few feathers. It remains to be seen whether Kisner can follow in Miller’s footsteps and provide the kind of commentary that golf fans deserve. However, it sure seems like the golfer is on his way to being the best.

Kevin Kisner’s latest commentary endeavor
Four-time PGA TOUR winner Kevin Kisner has been named lead analyst for NBC Sports’ golf coverage, joining veteran play-by-play commentator Dan Hicks in the booth for its presentations of PGA TOUR events and major championships. Kisner will serve as lead analyst for the majority of men’s golf events on NBC, including the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, the PLAYERS Championship, the FedExCup Playoffs, and the Ryder Cup. He will also maintain a limited playing schedule on the PGA TOUR.
Kisner expressed his humility and gratitude for the opportunity to join the NBC broadcast team, saying, “I’m humbled and grateful to have the chance to sit in the seat that many legends like Johnny Miller and Paul Azinger have sat in before me on NBC.” He added, “I’m looking forward to offering a different voice and adding a new dynamic to the broadcasts, hopefully reaching more fans and telling things like it is. That’s what I think I do best.” Kisner also shared his enthusiasm for continuing to compete on the PGA TOUR, noting, “I’m also excited to continue to compete on the PGA TOUR amongst my peers, which I think will help me to tap into what these guys are really feeling on the course.” What are your thoughts on Kisner’s commentary?
