The 2024 US Women’s Open had a rather unexpected opening round. Despite having big names on the leaderboard like Nelly Korda, Lydia Ko, and Rose Zhang, it was Filipino-Japanese professional golfer Yuka Saso who will enter the second round with the lead.

She is currently at a 2-under 68, just a stroke ahead of Andrea Lee, Wichanee Meechai, and amateur golfer Adela Cernousek, who are tied for the second position. Even the defending champion, Allisen Corpuz, dropped to a T70 on Thursday. Nonetheless, this is just the beginning, and there is enough scope to amp up the game!

Who will Nelly Korda tee off with on Friday?

Notably, it was not just Nelly Korda who stumbled with her gameplay at the Lancaster Country Club on Thursday. After round 1, only four players managed to get an under-par score. But why is it so? Well, it’s all thanks to hole 12!

The twelfth hole has caused havoc at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open

From No. 1 Rolex player Nelly Korda(who carded a septuple bogey) to defending champion Allisen Corpuz (who settled for a triple bogey), even the best of the golfers found it difficult to get a shot at the twelfth hole. The blowing wind made it all the worse. The creek of water at the hole further exacerbated the golfers’ difficulties.

Corpuz and Korda struggled with their choice of irons. On the other hand, Gaby Lopez and Ingrid Lindblad got their balls stuck in the water in the hole. The likes of Lydia Ko and Charley Hull also made double bogeys, while Caroline Inglis settled for a triple bogey.

Will the second round be a better experience for the players, or was the first round just a trailer of what they are about to be a part of for the remaining three days? Stay tuned to find out!
