It was a battle between the Aussies for a spot in the 124th U.S. Open! 64 players entered the U.S. Local Qualifying event in Springfield Country Club on June 3rd, 2024. Among them were former world #1 Adam Scott and 1-time PGA Tour winner, Cameron Davis. Only four spots were promised for the field and the pros from the Land Down Under were eager for it.

After round one concluded, Scott was the 18-hole leader as he carded a bogey-free round and finished 6 under 64. However, by the second-round finish, Scott faced a tragic end at the hands of Davis, and that now hinders his historic run at the major championship.

After an incredible round one, Adam Scott was expected to play better over the next 18 holes. However, that was not the case, as per usopen.com, Scott made five bogeys to be 1 under 69. The former world no. 1 was tied with Cameron Davis as their aggregate score stood at 7 under 133. Eventually, the two entered a playoff.

On the first playoff hole, the 43-year-old chipped in a birdie and Davis answered back with a thrilling birdie to be tied again. As they moved to the second, Davis and Scott made pars. It was at the third hole that the young pro continued to make a birdie but Scott sufficed with a par putt.

With that, he exited the U.S. Open’s qualifying without a spot and broke his 23-year-long streak of playing in every major since 2001. Scott has played in 92 majors so far and has one major championship (2013 Masters) under his belt. But this year, unfortunately, he might not be seen at Pinehurst though will be the first alternate in case of withdrawals.

When Davis was informed that he had broken that streak of Scott, the Aussie pro called the 43-year-old his “idol” and hoped that Scott could still get in the 124th U.S. Open via a different route. But does the former world no. 1 have a different path to the U.S. Open?

Can Adam Scott still qualify for the 2024 U.S. Open?

There are a lot of ifs and buts for Adam Scott to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Open. Scott currently takes the 60th position on the Official World Golf Rankings. And per the USGA qualification criteria, the top 60 on the OWGR will qualify for the U.S. Open. But he might lose this rank as the 1-time major winner is not playing in the Memorial Tournament this week.

Notably, by the end of the week, the top 60 will change, making Scott go further down the rankings. So, only if the players behind him play poorly at the Memorial, and Scott’s rank doesn’t change, he may qualify for the 124th U.S. Open. But the chances are low. Secondly, Scott might receive a special exemption from the USGA to tee up this year at Pinehurst.

But for now, there has been no news regarding it. Will this be the end of Adam Scott’s 23-year-old long streak or will he be able to be a part of the 2024 Pinehurst No.2 field?
