Tyrrell Hatton has been stuck in between a rock and a hard place since joining LIV Golf. The English pro golfer has been trying to find ways to participate in as many big competitions as he can. His efforts in the DP World Tour events have ensured that he will be a part of some of the biggest golfing events next year.

Hatton has already qualified for the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship (contingent on the fact that he can maintain his Top 100 position in the OWGR), and the Open Championship in 2025. Given the fact that he has been reinstated to the DP World Tour recently, Tyrrell Hatton will also be able to compete for the R2DR next year.

However, one competition that he might still face challenges to qualify for is the 2025 Ryder Cup. The prestigious tournament requires pros of the highest level to earn valuable Ryder Cup points to automatically qualify for their national teams.

The likes of Rory McIlroy, Rasmus Hojgaard, and other pros who have not moved to LIV Golf have more opportunities to gain points. Apart from DP World Tour tournaments, they can secure wins in the PGA Tour events to qualify for the tournament on merit. However, Tyrrell Hatton doesn’t have the same opportunities to secure a place.

Hatton talked about the same issue at length in a press conference held at the Riyadh Golf Club. The reporter asked Hatton what are his goals for the 2025 season and what challenges he might face. The Englishman straightaway replied, I want to be on the Ryder Cup team.” Speaking about his efforts so far in 2024, Hatton said, “I think with how certainly the win at the Dunhill and then playing well in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the World Rankings that I got from there, I think I’m pretty much secure in,” as he hinted that he might have already secured a place in the Ryder Cup squad.

The world no. 16 then delved into the topic of qualifying for the majors next season, he said, “I don’t think I can fall outside the top 100, so I’ll be in the U.S. PGA. And I don’t think I can fall outside the top 60 before the cut for the U.S. Open. The fact that I’ve got all four U.S. majors next year is great,” suggesting that he might make it to the 2025 U.S. Open as well.

Going back to Ryder Cup qualification, Hatton added, “Outside of that, the only event I’ve got Ryder Cup points would be the Desert Classic in January. So as I already touched on earlier, my opportunities for Ryder Cup points are more limited than others,” as he talked about the limited opportunities he has as compared to his fellow Team Europe candidates.

“I’m going to have to play really well to be in the automatic picks,” said Tyrrell Hatton as he laid out his plans for the 2025 season. The 7X DP World Tour winner spoke about how eager he is to represent Team Europe in 2025: “I really want to be on the Ryder Cup team. As everyone says, once you’ve played one, you never want to miss one again. I’ve been fortunate to play in the last three, and I’d love to make it four in September.”

Considering his position on the OWGR table and his current form, it’s not hard to imagine him procuring enough points to earn the automatic qualification for the 2025 Ryder Cup. But before that, he has a few challenges up ahead that he will need to overcome. Let’s check out what they are.

How can Tyrrell Hatton achieve his 2025 Ryder Cup goal?

As the 33-year-old mentioned, he has very few opportunities to qualify for Team Europe next year. His next big shot comes at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic 2025. The biggest threat he faces in the tournament is from the defending champion, Rory McIlroy. The Irishman has been in red-hot form after his incredible win at the 2024 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai a few weeks ago. Hatton will also look out for LIV Golf compadre, Jon Rahm, who will be making his debut in the event this year.

Hatton can also secure wins at either of the majors next year to confirm his place in Team Europe. At present, he sits at 3rd on the Europe Team Rankings with 587.84 points. Matt Wallace is one place below him at 505.42 points. McIlroy leads the table with 792.07 points thanks to his win in the season-ending event.
