The final stop of the 2024 PGA Tour regular season, the Wyndham Championship, kicks off tomorrow. At Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina, all eyes are on the players and the sky. Why the sky, you may ask?  Well, the 2024 PGA Tour season has been marked by frustrating weather delays such as a two-round halt in the PLAYERS Championship, and suspending the last round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

But if the weather cooperates, fans can expect to see top contenders like Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry, Jordan Spieth, and Sungjae Im ruling the greens. Will the sun shine brightly for the start of the championship, or will Mother Nature have other plans? Let’s dive more, as unpredictable weather hangs over the tournament like a dark cloud.

According to Accuweather, Thursday’s forecast at Sedgefield Country Club looks ominous, as Tropical Storm Debby brings a potent mix of wind and rain. Fans and players should brace for a challenging day with winds whipping in from the east-southeast at 20 mph and gusting up to 9 mph.

Debby is set to bring a relentless downpour, with a staggering 38.8 mm of rain expected. Thunderstorms are highly likely, with a 59% chance of seeing lightning in the sky. The course will be saturated, and flooding is a concern. With 99% cloud cover, the day will be shrouded in thick, gray clouds.

Meanwhile, as the storm lingers into Friday, heavy showers and thunderstorms will still dominate the agenda, and 49.8 mm of rain is likely to fall. Moreover, winds will shift to the south-southeast at 6 mph, with gusts reaching up to about 30 mph.

Be ready for a challenging day with significant interruptions. As a result, with the high alert on the weather, the first two rounds could potentially be called off. But can golf enthusiasts expect to watch their favorite player clinch the trophy?

What are the chances for the successful completion of the event?

Despite a challenging start, the Wyndham Championship may see a successful completion. Saturday’s forecast brings a welcome respite, with intervals of sunshine and lighter winds, although brief showers are still possible. Sunday’s final round is expected to be more settled, with lighter winds and less intense thunderstorms.

While the weather will remain humid and overcast, the prospects for a successful finish are improving. Moreover, if the weather implications persist, the PGA Tour has a history of finding solutions. If the weather forecast does not show any recovery signs, the Monahan-led PGA Tour can come up with a plan to continue play on Monday, as last witnessed at the Cognizant Classic this year.

Wyndham Championship is the last chance for the PGA Tour pros to come in the top 7- of the FedEx Cup standings so that they can compete in the FedEx Cup. Will something similar happen at this week’s tournament? Per the weather reports, the chances seem high, as water pooling on the greens can be witnessed. Will you be present at the play on Thursday and Friday? Good luck with the weather.
