Can Tom Kim achieve a legendary three-peat, or will another golfer steal the spotlight in Vegas?

The fourth event of the FedEx Cup Fall will tee off this Thursday. The PGA Tour’s annual stop at Las Vegas has added significance this time. The reason, of course, is Tom Kim’s chance of a historic three-peat. Last year, the South Korean pipped Adam Hadwin by one stroke. A year before, Kim shot 24-under, tying the Shriners Children’s Open scoring record to net his second PGA Tour victory.

Chan Kim, Robby Shelton, and Ryan Moore will hit the opening shot from the 1st tee at 9.55 AM ET. On the other hand, Matthew NeSmith, Bud Cauley, and Ben Silverman will tee off from the 10th.

Defending champion Tom Kim will kickstart his historic three-peat journey at 3:18 PM ET from the first tee. He is paired with rookie winner Matt McCarty and 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship winner Kevin Yu. Here are the full tee times and pairings for the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open.

The Shriners Children’s Open will have a purse of $7M, of which $1.26M is reserved for the champion. Besides the dough and 500 FedEx Cup points for the winner, Tom Kim alone has made the event more interesting. Kim stands to do what hasn’t been done in more than a decade.

Key players to follow in the Shriners Children’s Open

Since the turn of the century, only three players have won a single event three times in a row. Tiger Woods, however, has done it six times alone, including a four-peat at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (2000-03) and Farmers Insurance Open (2005-08). Stuart Appleby clinched The Sentry thrice between 2004 and 2006. Whereas, Steve Stricker, the last person to pull off a three-peat, won the John Deere Classic between 2009 and 2011.

Many players have successfully defended their PGA Tour titles. Most recently Scottie Scheffler did at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open. But this year, the world no. 1 came up short, finishing three strokes behind Nick Taylor. Sam Burns (Valspar Championship), K.H. Lee (AT&T Byron Nelson), Rory McIlroy (RBC Canadian Open and THE CJ CUP), Patrick Cantlay (BMW Championship), and Max Homa (Fortinet Championship) have found themselves in a similar situation before.

Aside from Tom Kim, the halfway mark of the FedEx Cup Fall turns interesting because of Matt McCarty as well. The KFT grad has changed all equations in the FedEx Cup standings. He is now 95, pushing Daniel Berger into uncertainty (126th). Berger will look to fortify his status on the FedEx Fall leaderboard with a top-ten finish at the Shriners Children’s Open.

Whereas, Adam Hadwin, the most successful player in the field other than Kim, will once again eye for a victory at a tournament where he has four top-tens in his last five starts. His compatriot, Taylor Pendrith, is ready to top his spectacular run of form with a title. Pendrith has two top-fives from his last five starts and has yet to finish outside the top 25. Golf Channel will broadcast the Shriners Children’s Open on all four days.
