LIV Golf Mayakoba safely climbs over to the final round, despite threats of food poisoning looking to mar the inaugural celebration. Instead, the very first round got a history-making record from Joaquin Niemann. The Chilean pro will pocket $4 million if he can hold on to his lead down the stretch.

Compared to LIV’s last season, the multi-million-dollar pot has remained the same, but it has gone through some overhauls in between to accommodate the new players. LIV Golf now has 54 players, with 13 teams and two wildcard entries (6 more players than in 2023). The top spot still gets you the same paycheck as last year, and the 48th-place finish will also earn $120,000. However, PIF officials brought in some changes in cases of ties.

In line with some changes in the format courtesy of a new team, LIV Golf announced that there won’t be any tiebreakers except for the top three spots. Following the PGA Tour model, the money will be distributed evenly between players who finish at the same spot. Here is the full purse breakdown at LIV Golf Mayakoba.

What’s cooking at Mayakoba?

Jon Rahm’s much-anticipated LIV debut was eclipsed by Joaquin Niemann. Sizzling through the par-71 El Camaleon with a whopping ten birdies and one eagle, the former PGA Tour Pro carded a bogey-free 12-under 59. The 25-year-old showed a glimpse of what made him a force to be reckoned with at the PGA Tour, where he raked in two silverware laced with 22 top-ten finishes.

Although Niemann clung to his lead with 13 under 70 in the second round, Jon Rahm moved one step closer to the top. Finishing the first round with two bogeys on the final hole and some choice words to voice his frustration, Rahm started the second round by saving par. A bogey followed. But the defending Masters champion quickly shook off the rust with five birdies, posting 9-under, 67 to come in third.

Jon Rahm was not the only captain to make the most of ‘moving day’. Smash GC Captain Brooks Koepka climbed seven places to the fifth position, carding 3-under 68. Bubba Watson, on the other hand, fluttered four birdies and an eagle to tie at eight with Dustin Johnson.

Last year’s money list topper, Talor Gooch, moved up 13 places to come within the top 20. Gooch finished round one with two bogeys and two double bogeys that nullified his five birdies. The Oklahoma resident bettered yesterday’s 1-over 72 with a 1-under 71 in the penultimate round.
