Honda LPGA Thailand marks the start of the LPGA Tour’s early East Asian Swing. The 17th edition of the event has drawn in five of the past champions to the field, including the defending champion Lilia Vu. Aside from Vu, five of the top ten in the Rolex World Ranking are also vying for victory at the Siam Country Club Old Course. Apart from a hefty purse on offer, there are other rewards up for grabs.

The LPGA Tour, in line with a general trend in golf, boasts an inflated purse this year. As opposed to the $70 million on offer last year, the female circuit this year has $118 million on offer throughout the season. That’s a 69% bump over last year’s purse size.

Apart from the prize money there is a lot more at stake, with important points, perks, and benefits, particularly for the winner.

The winner of this tournament wins 500 points toward the season-long race to the CME Globe and a $4 million first-place prize available to the winner of the CME Group Tour Championship. Winning comes with other big benefits, including a two-year exemption on the LPGA Tour, as well as berths in other big tournaments.

The Thailand tournament will be the third event of the 2024 LPGA Tour schedule. With 72 players in the field, there is no cut to the top 65 players and ties after 36 holes, as is standard practice on the LPGA Tour.

Thailand event finely poised ahead of final round at Chonburi

Patty Tavatanakit, the local favorite, shot 6-under 66 on a moving day to maintain a three-shot lead over the next-best, Madelene Sagstrom. Tavatanakit is in red-hot form, coming fresh off a win at the Saudi Aramco Ladies Invitational on the LET side. If she continues to blaze ahead, this will be her first LPGA Tour victory outside the majors.
