The 2023 BMW Championship makes a return this week at the Olympia Fields North Course outside of Chicago. This will be a four-day event with no cuts at play. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the PGA Tour.

This will be the 34th edition of the championship. The total prize pool of the 72-hole tournament is a whopping $20 million. Let’s find out what it offers its participants for attending and winning the event.

Who is playing and what is the format of the 2023 BMW Championship?

The event will be held in a stroke play format over the course of 4 days and 72 holes. The field of players is small after 20 players got eliminated following the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week in Memphis, first event of the 2023 FedEx Cup playoffs.

The field now holds 50 players who will compete for the $20 million prize pool. Last year the championship was won by American golfer Patrick Cantley, who will be defending his title for the third year running.

Prominent player Rory McIlroy will be a major contender because of his excellent form at present. He finished third-tied in Memphis. Tommy Fleetwood would also be competing for his first title at Illinois.

Other notable names include several former champions of the event like 2018 champion Keegan Bradley, 2015 winner Jason Day and Justin Rose, the 2011 winner. Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Brian Harman and Matt Fitzpatrick will also have the spotlight on them. US Open champion Wyndham Clark will also be seen at the BMW Championship.

What will be the prize money distribution?

The prize pool is big worth $2o million and $3.6 million will go to the winner, that is 18% of the total prize pool. Along with this hefty paycheck, the winner will also get 2000 FedEx Cup points. The runner-up of the event will get $2,160,000.
