Is a Monday finish for the Wyndham Championship a disaster or an exciting twist for golf fans?

As Jay Monahan’s nightmare struck again in the first round of the Wyndham Championship, it was canceled for that very day after several postponements. Initially, the postponed first round was supposed to start at 3 p.m. ET, but it didn’t. The concerning weather continued, and the PGA Tour had to delay it even further. The new time was 8:50 a.m. ET on Friday before it got delayed again. Now, it is scheduled for 9:50 a.m. ET. However, there is a lingering concern about whether there will be a Monday finish to the 2024 season finale.

As per the latest reports for the Friday round, there is a 40% chance of rain at 8:00 a.m. ET, signaling that there could be further delays. Despite an expected improvement in the weather throughout the day, the chances of rain are predicted to rise again by 2:00 p.m. ET, according to weather reports from the PGA Tour on X. Still, after the delay, there shouldn’t be a Monday finish.

If the tour manages to finish the rest of the rounds from yesterday, half from today, half of the 2nd round tomorrow, and the 3rd round on Saturday itself, the final day will have only one round left, and the event can wind up on the same day. However, this will only be possible if weather issues fade away or no other external problems are present. Yes, the weather conditions should get better around 2 p.m. ET, but the weather remains cloudy with varying wind speeds between 10 and 15 mph. The speed of the wind can change the arrangement of the clouds and could lead to early rain.

There are chances of isolated storms in some parts of North Carolina, further adding to the concern. Noting the weather, Joel Dahmen, who is part of the field at the tournament, shared a post on X saying, “That seems like a lot of rain.” It all happened because a powerful storm, Tropical Debby, had been wreaking havoc on the Greensboro area. 4 to 6 inches of rain and strong winds of 25–30 mph forced the first round to be canceled.

The National Weather Service relayed a message stating, “This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order,” prompting the PGA Tour to take precautions. They even restricted fan entry for the first round to ensure everyone’s safety. With the possibility of a Monday finish still looming, would this be the first time the PGA Tour has done so?

Have an interesting take?

The Wyndham Championship wouldn’t be the first to finish on a Monday.

In the past, there have been more than 20 events since 2011 that have had an unscheduled Monday finish. The last one was at the 2024 Cognizant Classic, which was forced to finish on Monday due to inclement weather. There have been delays in multiple tournaments like RBC Heritage, Masters, WM Phoenix Open, and more, but none of them ended on Monday.

However, the tour had to cut the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, one of its signature events, short to 54 holes. Aside from the Cognizant Classic, there are no tournaments that ended on Monday, despite the delays this year. The question remains whether the Wyndham Championship will end up like the Cognizant event or conclude on Sunday as planned.
