After its invention in 1932, golf carts gained popularity in the 1950s and 1970s. In fact, the first gasoline-powered golf cart was invented in 1957 by Max Walker. Since its growth, the vehicle has been used for multiple purposes. This includes the mobility of golfers, and senior members, and carrying golf clubs across the course. It is multi-functional at such a level that other industries apart from golf also use the conveyance.
However, it is not the utility of the golf buggy that has stirred the golf community recently. Rather, it is an unanticipated act related to this transportation that has made the news. This has disturbed two major golf clubs because of the impact it holds.

On 30th May an arguably unimaginable incident took place. A total of nine gasoline-supported EZ-Go grey-colored golf cars were stolen from the cart shed. The owner of the Lapeer Country Club, Gordon Nelson stated, ” They cut the lock on the cart chorale.” He also conceded that the black-canopied carts were probably loaded onto a trailer by the thieves on Golf Road.

According to Nelson, the cost of each golf buggy was $6,500 and recently 75 of them had been delivered to the club. Nonetheless, the theft of nine of them implies a loss of $58,500. However, the owner also mentioned how there is an unlikely possibility that he will be able to replace them any time soon. The reason for the same is the unusually strong demand for golf cars. The estimated period of replacement given by him was August. This will definitely cause some problems for the business.
Although Nelson sounded optimistic as he claimed that they will try to make the best out of the situation. “There are more good people in the world, and maybe someone saw or heard something that can help us recover the golf carts,” he added. Some comfort can be found in the fact that the carts come with serial numbers and police departments across the area have been notified of the same.
The Lapeer Country Club golf cart case: Not the first incident of theft
Before this episode, a similar act was carried out at Metamora Golf & Country Club. On 20th May it was reported that seven golf carts were purloined in Metamora Township. This golf club, under the Lapeer County golf courses, consisted of white-colored golf cars with the classic black canopy.
Unlike the second case, this incident reported a damaged golf cart. The wrecked vehicle was located near the Pratt and Baldwin roads’ northeast corner in a chasm. According to the police reports the robbery had taken place in the night hours of 19 May and in the initial hours of Saturday morning.

The main reason, as per the police officials, is the growing need for the said transportation. The director of the golf course holds an opinion regarding how the incident took place. Rick Fleming said, “We can only believe they were trailered away. The one we found in a ditch probably fell off the trailer.” Though police are looking into the robbery, they believe the two incidents to be related. This urged other local clubs also to take measures.
