The PGA Tour moved to North Carolina for the sixth signature event and at the famed Quail Hollow Club, the pros are fighting it out for the last glory before the second major championship in Valhalla. The Wells Fargo Championship, which started on May 9th, will soon be coming to an end, giving out one of the highest payouts for the winners.
Just like other signature events, the Wells Fargo Championship is also a limited-field, no-cut event. The aforementioned criteria guarantee that every player will receive some part of the $20 million prize purse. Moreover, after Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Aberg’s withdrawal and Scottie Scheffler’s absence from Quail Hollow, the field was cut short to 68 players, giving a little bit more for the players. However, the winner would earn $3.6 million regardless.
On the other hand, the runner-up will get $2.16 million. The winner of the Wells Fargo Championship would also receive 700 FedExCup points and 60.90422 OWGR points. The prize money payout for the winner and runner-up is significantly higher than the alternate event, the Myrtle Beach Classic, played in South Carolina, where the winner will get $720,000.

The competition at Quail Hollow has been fierce and many have tried to enter the winner’s circle. However, only two have successfully separated from the 68-player field. The world no. 2 Rory McIlroy and the fourth-ranked Xander Schauffele have pulled away from the pack for an intense Sunday showdown between the two.

Rory McIlroy is vying for his fourth Wells Fargo Championship title
Xander Schauffele was the 36-hole leader at the Wells Fargo Championship followed by Rory McIlroy, who was 5 strokes behind the then leader. However, after the moving day concluded, the difference between McIlroy and Schauffele came down to only one stroke. The world no. 4 has not lifted any silverware since the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open.
Last year, Schauffele was four strokes behind Wyhdham Clark who ended up lifting the Bronze Cup at Quail Hollow. Now, he has to battle it out with McIlroy, who is fresh off a team win at the Zurich Classic. And he has conquered Quail Hollow three times before. The 30-year-old himself attested that the final round would be a bloodbath as he said, “I’m going to have to earn it tomorrow. I’ve got Rory breathing down my neck.”

McIlroy also found his swagger to score two consecutive rounds without a bogey and shot 4 under 67 on day three to close the gap between him and the 54-hole leader. The Northern Irishman talked about his 36 bogey-free holes and said, “To play two rounds in a row on this golf course in these conditions bogey-free is a bit of a feather in my cap, I’m pretty proud of that.”
This will be McIlroy’s third victory of the year and fourth at the Wells Fargo Championship. Who will take home the Blue Blazer and the $3.6 million winner’s cut between Rory McIlroy and Xander Schuaffele?
