After the conclusion of the first round at Pinehurst No. 2, a mix of expected and unexpected performances was witnessed by the golf world. Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay ended the day tied for the lead, each posting a score of 5-under 65. McIlroy’s round featured 5 birdies, while Cantlay carded 6 birdies and 1 bogey, resulting in their shared position at the top. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had a rather underwhelming start to the third major of the season as he finished his opening round at one over par.
Currently, he sits tied for 34th place alongside 15 other golfers, including Max Homa, Jason Day, and Tom Kim. Talking about the defending champion, Wyndham Clark carded 4 bogeys during the Thursday round, and he found himself at T65 with a 3-over-par 73 on his scorecard.
