Every June, the PGA Tour visits Cromwell, Connecticut for the annual Travelers Championship at TPC River Highland. The signature event has been a fixture on the PGA Tour since 1952 and was first known as the Insurance City Open. Over the last eight decades, from being known as the Greater Hartford Open Invitational, the event’s name has been changed six times.
After Travelers Insurance took over sponsorship in 2007, it was renamed again. Over the past decades, what has not changed is the prestigious trophy except for three years in 2004, 2005, and 2006 when the sponsorship was taken by Buick. The Travelers Championship’s trophy has been exclusively made by Lux Bond & Green, a family-owned business from Connecticut.
Just 10 miles from Hartford, Lux Bond & Green makes the glistening silver trophy which has been put up on a wood stand. The cup has the Travelers Championship on it in the middle. Whereas, at the bottom of the trophy, the names of the past 63 champions including the defending champion, Keegan Bradley have been carved.

Has the Traveler’s Championship changed its venue?
When the Travelers Championship started in 1952, the event was played in Connecticut. However, at that time, it was played at the Wethersfield Country Club, 7.8 miles away from the then-known Edgewood Country Club. The Travelers Championship was played at the Wethersfield CC for 30 years, the last champion being crowned at the course was Wayne Levi.
However, in 1991, the PGA Tour moved to TPC River Highland and since then has been played at it. The Highland is a 6,835-yard course with twelve par 4s, four par 3s, and only par 5s at the 5th and 13th hole. It has been a tough course for the players to conquer and to date only one player, Billy Casper has won it four times, followed by Bubba Watson three times in his PGA Tour career.
