Could the 2023 Ryder Cup heartbreak return in Quebec Canada, for the USA Team? Well, it very well has a chance to and more so after the second of the Presidents Cup concluded. The Americas were sailing high as they thrashed the International team on the first day at the Royal Montreal Golf Club and took a 5-0 lead. It was only four balls, and the pairings succeeded in that. But the nightmare started on Friday. In the first foursomes session, the USA Team lost two matches 1 up whereas three other matches were lost mainly because of poor performance.
To refresh it up, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele lost 7&6 to Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im, many regarded it as the shortest match of all day. Joining them was a 6&5 loss of Tony Finau and Wyndham Clark against the Canadian duo, Corey Conners & Mackenzie Hughes and Sahith Theegala with Collin Morikawa, who lost 5&4 to Adam Scott & Taylor Pendrith. After roasting the International Team on the first day, it was quite an abysmal defeat of Morikawa that he probably didn’t expect. Although the numbers show that the Americans struggled, it is not the first time that the USA Team lost in foursomes by a large margin.
Let’s roll it back to the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, and in all eight foursome matches, the American won only a point on Saturday of that week and gave away seven points to the European Team. The Athletic’s Justin Ray posted a stat related to how the American Team has performed in the last three foursomes and its result is shocking. The USA has a match record of 1-12 (Win-Loss) where they won only 34 holes, but their opponents in total won 74. Moreover, their defeat is not even justifiable as the American team doesn’t lead many times as low as 10 times in the last foursomes that they had a lead, but the opposition team led 105 times.

Truly, it showed the captain of the USA, Jim Furyk, that for the Saturday foursomes, he needs to change something or his team may get clean-swept once again. While it was a nightmarish day for the American side, as zero points were put up on their scorecards, the International Team had a fun ride and broke many expectations and records for their team and the Presidents Cup.
The International Team’s dominant run at the Presidents Cup
After being punched in the gut with 0-5 scores on the first day, the International Team got the best revenge they could at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. It was an impressive showing by the pairings as they destroyed the Americans left and right and for the first time since 2005 won a foursomes session on the Presidents Cup. Quite shocking, isn’t it? The USA Team has a streak of winning 17 consecutive foursomes, but for the first time in the last decade, they have lost it.

What’s your perspective on:
Can Jim Furyk turn around Team USA's fortunes in the 2024 Presidents Cup, or is it too late?
Have an interesting take?
When you talk about the past, Justin Ray also reported that in the history of the Presidents Cup, it was the first time that a team erased the 5-0 lead with another 5-0 lead in the second; it has been the largest in the event’s history. Another stunning record was that the International Team won three matches quite dominantly than the other two, which were 1up wins.
The three-match scores were 7&6, 5&4, and 6&5 on the second day. The international team won only four foursomes between 1994 and 2022 but on Friday at the Royal Montreal Golf Club they challenged the past and won three on a single day as they led on 57 holes and the American led only one. Statistically, the International Team outweighs the USA Team and the latter will have to work on many things before they tee up for the Saturday foursomes and just hope that this time, they are not missing the putts.
