Only 18 holes remain to crown the second Mizuho Americas Open winner! After the first exciting three days, different players took the lead at the Liberty National. First, it was rookie player, So Mi Lee and then the Thai star, Atthaya Thitikul, who was the 36-hole leader. Thitikul’s round was so impressive that even the world no. 1 believed her gameplay was lackluster compared to that of the 21-year-old.

However, the tables have turned and Nelly Korda took the lead after 54 holes. The 25-year-old was able to do so as she shot a bogey-free 7 under 65. In contrast, Thitikul’s rank took a drastic drop. The Thai national found herself at T15 after round three. As the leader enters the final day, Korda’s tee time is scheduled at the very end.

She would be joined by 5-time LPGA Tour winner, Hannah Green. The Perth native is only two shots behind Korda and a solo second on the leaderboard. The two are scheduled to start the round at 1:05 p.m. EST at the Liberty National Golf Club.

With Korda reigning on the leaderboard once again, the 13-time LPGA Tour winner is one of the top contenders to win her title at the New Jersey event. Though it would be less historical than the consecutive wins, with Rose Zhang out of the field, it would be far easier to clinch the feat. But why did the defending champion quit the Liberty National greens?

Mizuho Americas Open and the mysterious illness

After Maja Stark and Caroline Masson, Rose Zhang was the third golfer to withdraw from the Mizuho Americas Open due to an unknown illness. The defending champion later explained that she had extreme abdominal pain and could not continue to play at the Liberty National Golf Club.

Later, more withdrawals followed and the total number of withdrawals from the Mizuho Americas Open reached 10. Out of which three were due to injury, the other seven cited illnesses. The LPGA Tour then released a statement regarding the withdrawals and illness. The LPGA Tour took to their official X handle and revealed that the various symptoms pointed towards a possible viral infection They further added that the tournament organizers, along with the women’s circuit, had taken appropriate safety measures. Since then, no other golfer has withdrawn from the Mizuho Americas Open.

Who do you think will prevail in the fourth round of the Mizuho Americas Open? Will it be Nelly Korda or someone else?
