Argentine golfing phenom, Angel Cabrera, will be playing at the upcoming Masters Tournament. The 55-year-old who has won two majors during the course of his career had been inactive after serving more than 30 months in prison for misdeeds against his partner Cecilia Torres and former partner Micaela Escudero.

After getting released from prison, the PGA Tour had cleared him to play in PGA Tour-sanctioned events in December 2023. This year, he has already played at two PGA Tour Champions events, the Trophy Hassan II and the Chubb Classic. This will be, however, his first start at a PGA Tour since the 2019 Masters Tournament.

Cabrera was arrested in January 2021 in Rio De Janeiro and was released in August 2023. In an interview with Golf Digest post his release, he admitted to his mistakes and pleaded for forgiveness from his partners. “I refused to listen to anyone and did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted. That was wrong. I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of being with me when I was at my worst,” Cabrera stated.

Cabrera also added that his time alone in prison, after his cellmate got released, allowed for a lot of reflection and understanding, especially with regards to his passion, golf. On his release, he had shared with Golf Digest, “It would be a great privilege to return and to attend the Champions Dinner with so many of the golf world’s greatest players.” And now it is possible for him. Cabrera will be looking for redemption on the golf course when he tees off at the Augusta National in what is one of the most anticipated events of the year. For him, it is likely not the competitiveness, it is more about self-belief, and his family would be right beside him when he tees off in Georgia.

Angel Cabrera’s family life

Cabrera is currently married to Yamila Alvarez. Alvarez started dating Cabrera nearly 5 years ago and has stood by the golfer during his difficult times. They used to meet at regular intervals, despite him being incarcerated. “Cabrera was among inmates granted two-hour visits with partners every 15 days because of good behavior,” ESPN had stated.

The couple welcomed their first son, Felipe, in 2022. His son has been a transformative presence for the Argentine, who wanted to set a good example for him.”Felipe’s arrival helped a lot. It makes me want to get better, so I can be there for him and help him grow and become a good person,” added Cabrera.
