No athlete can consistently lead a successful career. Especially if that career spans several decades. They all go through slumps, ups, and downs. Greg Norman, the former World No. 1, went through something similar in his career. In 2018, he recalled how, during one such draught in his career, the golf legend Jack Niklaus helped him out. The golf legend’s words of advice had helped him put an end to a long 2-year unfortunate draught.

Despite winning 73 times on the PGA Tour, Nicklaus’ game hasn’t always been consistent. Similarly, the shark, too, has seen tough days in the sport.

In 2018, in an interview with The Sun, Norman opened up about a low point in his career. In 1992, the LIV Golf CEO was going through a rough patch in his career. “I was going through a slump of nearly two years without winning a golf tournament,” said the ex-pro golfer. Having no idea how to deal with the dreadful situation, the shark approached Jack Nicklaus for help. Despite not seeing eye to eye anymore, the two were very close back in the day.

The two-time major winner explained that Nicklaus was a “phenomenal” player, but his career too had ups and downs. Norman knew that a golden bear could help him deal with the situation. “You’re taking little bits of information and plugging it into your life,” he explained to the press, talking about the golf legend’s advice for him.

The shark stated that he didn’t agree with everything that the 18-time major winner said, but he didn’t need to. “One or two points I picked up and — BOOM — it turned me around,” he stated. “About a month after, I won the Canadian Open and I did it with pomp.” After putting Nicklaus’ advice into action, he beat Bruce Lietzke in a playoff in September of 1992.

In the interview, the 20-time PGA Tour winner explained that he didn’t need help with the way he played the game or his approach. “It wasn’t about how to swing a golf club,” he stated. “It was about how to deal with the mental aspect of not winning a tournament after being used to winning.” The shark was unable to cope with not getting a win.

The losses had also begun affecting his mental resolve, and he wanted to know if the best in the game had been through that too and how he had dealt with it. The talk he had with the golf legend certainly helped him improve.
