Putters are on the move! The quest for redemption has begun at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Two rounds down, and Hideki Matsuyama is on top of the race for the $3.6 million prize. As players fine-tune their strategies, a subtle yet significant shift has caught the attention of the practice green. Just ask Scottie Scheffler, who made the bold switch to a mallet putter earlier this season at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and it resulted in a resounding success. But he isn’t the only one who sought a revival; this time it’s Jordan Spieth.
Jordan Spieth has joined the mallet putter bandwagon, sparking excitement among fans. Spieth Legion, on their X handle, shared, “🚨 #BREAKING: Jordan Spieth has a new putter in the bag on the practice green before his round. It is a mallet.” Spieth’s attempt to switch his putter came after two rounds of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. However, the excitement caught fire on different terms, as fans mocked him for trying a new putter, and trying to mock the success of world number 1. Interestingly, in 2017 too, he switched to a mallet putter at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

The 13-time PGA Tour champ found himself in unfamiliar territory at the TPC Southwind. He carded 68 and 75, 2-over par 141, resulting in a two-way tie for 62nd place. Moreover, this wasn’t the start Spieth had envisioned. So, in a bold move, he opted for a change, hoping the mallet putter would be the spark that reignites his putting prowess and propels him up the leaderboard as it did for Scheffler.
Last year, we saw something special Scottie Scheffler switched from a TaylorMade Spider Tour X “SS Proto” mallet putter to a Spider Tour X mallet last season. As reported by the PGA Tour, he had said, “This Spider putter is really easy for me to line up. I don’t have to use the line on the ball. I line the putter up really well, and I line up in the middle of the face, and pretty much as simple as that. Kind of gives me just a really good visual.” The results were impressive; so far this season, he has bagged six victories on the PGA Tour, including the coveted Masters.
But just as we thought Spieth was making a change, the Spieth Legion dropped another bombshell. The post read, “UNBELIEVABLE HE’S USING HIS OLD PUTTER AFTER PRACTICING WITH THE MALLET BEFORE THE ROUND😂😂😂” Guess Spieth had a change of heart. Maybe he just needs some time to trust the new mallet, till then he sticks to his old choice.

One fan wasn’t holding back; he said, “10 years too late.” And honestly, it’s hard to argue with that. Jordan Spieth’s trusty sidekick, the Scotty Cameron 009 prototype, has been with him since 2015. That’s a decade of reliance on the same putter, and fans can’t help but wonder if it’s time for a change. The fan’s comment stings, but it’s a harsh reminder that sometimes even the most beloved companion needs to let go. While another added to the same, “Hilarious it took this long.” Spieth in his prime was one of the top forces to be reckoned with but he has been slowing down for quite some time now. His last win on the Tour was in 2022 at RBC Heritage.
“Does he have new irons? That’s where the problem is.” Another commented, shifting the focus from Spieth’s putter to his irons. It seems the search for answers continues, and the fans are pointing fingers at different parts of his game. However, the last noted period when he switched to Titleist T100 irons was during the 2021 British Open.
“It’s over,” one fan bluntly commented, summing up the dire situation. He seems to believe that with Spieth’s current ranking and his deteriorating performance, he won’t make the top 50. As things stand, he’ll need a lot more to clinch a spot to qualify for the BMW Championship. If the golfer’s season gets over, he might get surgery done on his wrist and could come back stronger next year.

A golf enthusiast weighed in with a candid opinion; he said, “He’s scared of change, which is why his career is falling apart.” The comment suggests that Jordan Spieth’s reluctance to adapt and evolve his game is a major factor in his struggles. An example can be him not trusting the new equipment and sticking to the old. For two years now, Spieth has been winless and has been an average player, unlike the beast he was in his initial days who was T2, T1, and T2 at Augusta in 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively.
Fans made a harsh but straightforward assessment while watching Jordan Spieth from the sidelines. Rest apart. Will he switch his trust to a new putter in upcoming matches? Let us know what you think of this in the comments section below.
