Is the International Team's 26-year drought a sign of deeper issues, or just bad luck?

With all their grit, the International Team still lost the Presidents Cup to the USA. It was a valiant effort from them as they bounced back from a 5-0 foursome loss on the opening day. But even after winning all the fourball matches the next day, the roster could not keep pace and eventually lost after earning 11.5 against Team USA’s 18.5. Many from the American side went home in celebratory mode and recovered. But was it the same for the team who continued their 26-year-old drought? It was not.

The recovery for the Internationals was pretty hard. After two weeks had passed, two of the key players from Mike Weir’s team, Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith relived the 2024 Presidents Cup. The two were a part of the latest podcast episode of The Symlie Show hosted by former Tour pro-Smylie Kaufman.

There, Conners, one of three golfers to win a point on Sunday Singles for the International Team, revealed the stress the tournament caused when the host enquired about the mental break the former took. The 2-time PGA Tour winner agreed and said, “Yeah, pretty much, definitely, four or five days after trying to mentally recover is the big thing.” Alluding to the unpredictable results of the event over the four days, Conners shared how it was; “It’s pretty draining mentally.”

Despite continuing the winless curse, International golfers had to return to the PGA Tour sooner rather than later. The captain Mike Weir prepares for the Black Desert Championship but Conners has still not teed up on the PGA Tour.

Corey Conners played only the Procore Championship before the Presidents Cup and is yet to play any event in the fall season. And it seems that the Montreal heartbreak had affected him so much that he missed out on the Sanderson Farms Championship and is not in the field of the Black Desert Championship either. So what’s the Canadian pro up to?

Corey Conners reveals his recipe for Presidents Cup recovery

The 2-time PGA Tour winner revealed exactly what he did after the conclusion of the patriotic battle and what he probably is doing now too. Talking about his recovery process, Conners told Smylie Kaufman, “[I] was able to get home the following week and hang out with my wife (Malory Conners) and daughter (Reis Conners) and kind of get back to a little little bit of normal life but try and recover a little bit.” Spend time with loved ones, they say!

Have an interesting take?

Although Conners not playing actively in the Fall schedule of the PGA Tour might be because of the 2024 Presidents Cup but in the 2022-23 season also, he participated in only one event, the RSM Classic. There is a chance that Conners may not tee up again in the 2024 season as he is 39th on the FedExCup Standings and has secured his 2025 season on the PGA Tour.
