On the PGA Tour, tradition dictates that Tiger Woods wears red on Sundays. But Rickie Fowler adds another vibrant splash of color to the final day with his signature Sunday orange attire. The 35-year-old’s fashion statement isn’t his only recognizable trademark. He’s also known for carrying a distinctive metal water bottle adorned with various stickers, a constant companion at every event.

But why the constant companion? The answer, as revealed by the 6-time PGA Tour winner himself at a US Open press conference, is surprisingly practical.  “I drink more water and electrolytes when I carry it,” said Fowler at the US Open’s press conference. This simple act, he says, began at the start of the 2023 season and has become a key part of his routine.  Plus, there’s an added bonus: by carrying the canteen himself, he spares his caddie, Ricky Romano, the burden of lugging around a heavy, full bottle throughout the day.

So what about the stickers on the water bottle? The 35-year-old relays that they don’t have any special meaning but were given by “friends of friends or connections in one way.” A few visible stickers are a cartoon of Fowler, a skeleton trading card from Sump Coffee, and a light bulb from St. Louis’s brewery called Side Project. The last one is Fowler’s favorite out of all the stickers on the canteen.

Last year, when Fowler revealed the concept behind his metal water bottle, he was co-leading and heading into the U.S. Open’s final round. A year later, after experiencing a missed cut at the Scottish Open and consistently poor performances, Fowler barely saved himself from missing the Open Championship’s cut and secured a place for the weekend at the Royal Troon Golf Club. This means that the 35-year-old will wear orange on Sunday. Have you ever wondered why Fowler chose orange out of all the colors available?

Why does Rickie Fowler wear orange on Sunday?

Rickie Fowler’s tradition of wearing orange goes back to his university days; then, the 35-year-old used to wear orange from top to bottom. Now that he has entered his mid-thirties, he chooses a single item like a hat, a polo t-shirt, or even an orange belt. All of this represents Oklahoma State University, which shaped Fowler’s collegiate career and has orange and black as primary colors.

When he was in college, Fowler recounted that during that period it was more of a bonding thing with his teammates, as many wore orange. However, when he debuted on the PGA Tour, no one was wearing orange. So, the 6-time PGA Tour winner started the trend as he said, “I like to think of it as my own personal style.”
