On Friday, spectators at Muirfield saw 25-year-old Justin Suh edge past several golf heavyweights to take the lead at the ongoing Memorial Tournament. The young PGA Tour pro currently has a one-stroke lead at the top as the event enters its penultimate round.

After the second round drew to an end, Suh opened up to Golf Channel about one of the primary reasons behind his stellar showing on the greens. Let’s dive in to find out more!

The second day of the 2023 Memorial Tournament saw Justin Suh card an impressive 6-under 66 to power his way to the top of the leaderboard. He now sits one stroke ahead of past champion Hideki Matsuyama. World No. 4 and two-time Memorial winner Patrick Cantlay is another shot behind at T3.

As Suh basked in the attention on Friday, his putter was as much in the limelight as he was. After all, the tournament’s second round saw the golfer hole eight putts from the 10-foot range or longer! This week, the World No. 71 has gained 7.33 strokes in putting, which puts him in first place and nearly 2.5 shots better than the second player in the category!

What’s even more surprising is that the golfer has used the same Nike putter since the eighth grade! “I think I put it in eighth grade,” said Suh, shedding light on the story behind it. “I broke the putter I had before; the shaft bent. So I went into the pro shop, and, you know, I just picked this one out. And I think I shot 66 the following day.

The golfer had previously won the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Championship using the very same golfing accessory. As he progresses into the tournament’s final two rounds, there is no doubt that all eyes will definitely be on Suh and his iconic putter!

The story behind Justin Suh’s longtime putter

Every week, golfers on the PGA Tour get access to an unending supply of world-class putters from major manufacturers. However, Justin Suh isn’t the type of golfer to fall prey to the temptation.

The reigning Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year uses a Nike Method Core Mod-4w putter, something he bought out of need for $50 while he was in eighth grade. One of the main reasons the golfer’s putter has attracted so much attention is that Nike stopped manufacturing golf clubs and putters back in 2016!

The unique putter boasts a set of soft polymer grooves that boost launch as well as a set of metal grooves to ensure fast speed. Suh’s trust in the Nike product is such that he is not even tempted to use another. “I don’t really like changing things,” the 25-year-old shared on Friday. “I just trust what it does, and it’s been good to me in big moments.

Justin Suh has yet to register a win on the PGA Tour. A victory in the prestigious Memorial Tournament, which boasts an incredible prize purse of $20,000,000, will truly be an experience unlike any other for the golfer (and his putter)!
