Remember the Mexico Open numbers? What about the ones at the Scottie Scheffler-won TOUR Championship? Unfortunately, all of that seems to be taking shape once again as the viewership figures for the Procore Championship were released recently. Suffice it to say, the fans were not happy with the views that the first event of the Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour’s fall season raked in, despite the exciting win clinched by Patton Kizzire!
A report was shared by Josh Carpenter on his X handle mentioning the same. The Sports Business Journal reporter pointed out how only 69,000 people tuned in on Sunday for Kizzire’s win at the North Course of Silverado Resort & Spa. This, he highlighted, was a “big drop from last year, which saw 298,000 for Sahith Theegala’s win.”

Quite frankly, what else could you have expected, especially with the Solheim Cup and the Irish Open, the latter of which was headlined by the likes of Rory McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre, among others? Regardless of the reasons, the news did not quite end up on the community’s good side as many of them took to respond to the figures that Josh Carpenter divulged in his report.

Many would have preferred to watch Jon Rahm being crowned the LIV Golf Individual Champion. But then again, the viewership numbers weren’t as grand as one would expect them to be. The Sports Business Journal reporter himself pointed out in his X handle the same day how only 89,000 people tuned in for the Spaniard’s victory on September 15.
“Here is my mild take,” reacted a fan under Josh Carpenter’s tweet, “This is a way worse number than the 89k in the LIV event. Like a true disaster, even considering the Solheim and football going on.” Another follower compared the Jay Monahan-led Tour’s recent numbers to those from last year’s edition to highlight how bad it actually is: “A 77% reduction in audience year-over-year sounds bad.”

Scottie Scheffler’s arrest wasn’t the only thing that stood out during the 2024 PGA Championship. The major also made headlines owing to the ‘woeful coverage’ (to quote many) that ESPN+ dished out. It was riddled with commercials, course overviews, and analysts’ points of view—everything except for the match at Pinehurst No. 2. Well, the issue seems to have resurfaced as a user on X commented, “Shocking that nobody wants to watch a 4-hour infomercial with some no-name players on a crappy golf course thrown in here and there. I tried watching Saturday, took 22 minutes before showing a full swing shot. No thanks.”

A lot of golf fans would have surely preferred to watch the Solheim Cup, especially when the American team was dominating the European squad in many of the matches. The former defeated their rivals 15.5 to 12.5, clinching the trophy from Suzann Pettersen’s team. The event on Sunday, unsurprisingly, averaged a viewership of 657,000 on NBC. The fans, meanwhile, also preferred watching the biennial event, as one of them responded, “More interested in the Solheim Cup this weekend and guessing that viewership agrees with me.” Another enthusiast and Cleveland Browns fan shared the same opinion, “I mean, I watched the Solheim Cup for multiple hours, delayed watching the Browns so I could see the women clinch, and then tuned out of golf. Why would I watch PGA or LIV when I already invested hours on Solheim? I can’t be alone in this.”
Much of it was expected with so many golfing events taking place at the same time. But that doesn’t mean that Patton Kizzire’s win was any less scintillating. The golfer had, interestingly, put up a figure of 20-under overall to beat the field by five strokes. Quite a dominant display, if you think about it. Don’t you agree?
