Things can always take a sharp turn, and lately, a course in California witnessed that firsthand. In a matter of seconds, a disturbing new development took place at the once-loved Van Buskirk golf course just recently. This California municipal golf course, which has not been active since 2019, has experienced many incidents.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an issue that is new to the course; it’s something that they dealt with just a few months ago. So what is this persistent disaster that plagues the California course? Let’s find out.

It is not new for golf courses to experience strange things. This time, South Stockton’s Van Buskirk Golf Course had to face a fire on Friday afternoon. At close to 2 o’clock, neighborhood firefighters began battling the fire that ran wild on the grass. The main point of the blaze on the property was the area surrounding the Van Buskirk Community Center, right across the Conway Homes, and that is where the firemen rushed first.

According to Golfweek, smoke plumes were widely spread, and people could notice the flames from miles away. Although it is uncertain how many acres of the course burned down, the fire certainly dealt quite a bit of damage before the firefighters were able to tame it.

For the unaware, this is not the first time that this court has had to deal with a fire. Unfortunately, a very similar incident took place in June 2022, and a fire raged across the course. While this may have halted operations, it has been years since the course hosted a match. But that may soon change thanks to a master plan!

What was the master plan for the course?

Designed by Larry Norstrom, Van Buskirk Golf Court is a 214-acre land property. This course, located between Houston Avenue and French Camp Slough, has surprisingly not hosted a golf match since 2019, when it eventually shut down after being functional for around six decades.

It was then decided by the Van Buskirk family to give the land to the city for recreation purposes. However, recently, on January 24, Stockton City Council approved a master plan for a new layout.

On the property, a BMX track, skate park, splash pad, and disc golf would be installed. Aside from that, there will be a community garden and a flood control area. The exact completion date is not out yet, but we may see the optimum usage of the court soon.

Nevertheless, given how much the fire has damaged the land and grass, rebuilding and reworking the field will take some time. This ultimately means that the site will have to wait longer to be redesigned and put up as a recreation area.
