With round 1 of THE PLAYERS Championship 2024 right around the corner, it’s arguably the only thing on fans’ minds. There is no shortage of storylines to follow this week. Will Scottie Scheffler be able to get back-to-back Tour wins and simultaneously defend his title? Is Rory McIlroy back in form in time to grab his 25th Tour win? Will Jay Monahan be able to steer the Tour back into the green in terms of viewership? The answer to all this will perhaps unfold this week at the famous TPC Sawgrass.
Interestingly, the course at TPC Sawgrass isn’t just any old course. As home to THE PLAYERS since 1982, this has been the course that has crowned numerous champions. The course is known for its challenging layout and additionally boasts several features that are unique to its greens!

1. The accidental “island green”: The 17th Hole
The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, famous for its “island green,” is the most iconic hole of the championship. Initially, it was planned as a peninsula, but oversight failures led to too much of the prime sand being excavated. This almost-disaster was course-corrected by Alice Dye’s (co-designer of the course, alongside her husband, Pete Dye) imaginative suggestion to create an island green, marking a significant shift in the design of golf courses. Despite its intimidating presence to golfers, having sunk over 802 balls of the championship since just 2003, this hole is a testament to innovation. Alice Dye helped turn a logistical challenge into one of golf’s most iconic challenges. Its strategic location, sandwiched between the par-5 16th and a challenging finishing hole, makes for a dramatic pivotal moment in the game, embodying the golf legend and then PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman’s desire for a nail-biting finish.
2. Goats as groundskeepers: The furry four-legged friends
In a novel departure from typical course maintenance, designer Pete Dye used goats as natural landscapers at TPC Sawgrass. Along with effectively maintaining the vegetation, these out-of-the-ordinary groundskeepers brought humor and intricacy to the course’s evolution with their surprising clubhouse appearances and escaping from their enclosures. Their contributions, even with a few humorous hiccups, highlight the creative and inventive attitude that went into creating the course.
3. A dream that cost just a dollar
Deane Beman, the PGA Tour Commissioner at the time, paid just $1 for a 415-acre swamp in Florida, which marked the beginning of TPC Sawgrass’ transformation from an undeveloped wilderness to a premier golf destination. Inspired by Beman’s vision and a difficult terrain full of snakes and alligators, this was not an easy project. The land was bought in 1978, and in only 4 years, the construction was complete, and the course became the home of the championship. The conversion of such difficult land into a top-notch golf course is a testament to the tenacity that characterizes TPC Sawgrass.
4. “Stadium Golf”: A spectator’s haven
Deane Beman was the driving force behind the idea of stadium golf after seeing firsthand the drawbacks of watching golf competitions. The layout of TPC Sawgrass was created to maximize the viewing experience; it includes big mounds for unhindered views and a layout that lets spectators see many holes without having to walk far. This fan-focused strategy transformed how golf courses could serve gallery members, making the game more approachable and entertaining for spectators. It did this by using the dirt dug up to create water hazards for spectator mounds.
5. A balanced design for fair play
Beyond the advancements for onlookers, TPC Sawgrass was painstakingly created to provide golfers of all skill levels with a fair and balanced challenge. Regardless of a player’s tee time or chosen play style, Beman and Dye created a course that demands skill, strategy, and flexibility equally by guaranteeing equitable starting points and taking wind direction into account during layout design. The course’s reputation as a real test of golf, where every player has an equal chance of succeeding based on skill rather than luck, is further enhanced by this dedication to fairness.
