A war is on in the golf world; counterattacks are becoming common. LIV Golf entered the picture, PGA Tour enhanced its prize money. The Saudi-backed Tour then rebranded itself to the LIV Golf League, and the American Tour included more no-cut events and got trolled by the rival circuit. And now Jay Monahan is planning to add more designated events for 2024. It is what everyone has been talking about, and obviously, Phil Mickelson would not sit quietly. Therefore, in his recent tweet, he highlighted how OWGR points and designated events could affect the scenario of the golf world and shed light on the inside details of the PGA Tour.
Phil Mickelson highlighted the unknown facts
Well-renowned golf analyst and instructor Peter Kostis pointed out a question on Twitter. He asked, “Question. What happens to the TV contracts, sponsor contracts and purse sizes of the non-designated events in 2024?” He further added, “All of these were negotiated with a different landscape. Will sponsors and TV pay the same $ for what is perceived to be a lesser product?” The LIV defector, Mickelson, replied and explained how everything works.

The former PGA Tour pro explained that the TV deal is based on the quality of players. And these milestones are based on the OWGR points. The purse pool gets reduced if the field doesn’t meet the standards. However, he wasn’t sure if these rules were applied to all events or only a few particular ones.
He then added information about OWGR points that were not known to us. It was like a complete inside detail, which the American Tour did not state before. Mickelson said, “If LIV players were to receive points and the players were ranked in top 100, Tour would not come close to hitting these benchmarks and the tv deal would be SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. Explains why heads of OWGR don’t want to give points but whatever.”
