Amy Yang no doubt is a talented player and a veteran in the game. Who also is admired by many in the golf community. The golfer has a lot of accolades under her name with five wins on the LPGA Tour, including three victories at the Honda LPGA Thailand. Although she had been having a rough few years, the professional managed to jump right back on her feet with the most recent one at the CME Group Tour Championship, the season finale of the women’s circuit.

However, the South Korean professional could not have done it on her own. Although her skills and techniques are what helped the pro pull off amazing wins over the years, one cannot disregard the help that she has received on the course. Yes, it’s none other than her caddie!

Amy Yang has made a lot of big decisions in her career, which has helped her make a comeback to the game in a grand fashion and make a big impact on the LPGA Tour. Employing Jan P. Meierling as her caddie has helped her get back on her feet and win the final event of the 2023 season

Hailing from Dusseldorf, the German has been carrying the bags for the South Korean pro for a few years now. He was the looper for the golfer back in 2021 when she was diagnosed with a tennis elbow that came as a result of rock climbing during her workout at the gym.

Although the diagnosis left a huge dejection for the 5X LPGA champ, even thinking as far as giving up on the career, she was able to make a return to the game with ample help from her on-course partner. Together, they finished a total of four times inside the top 10 in 2023, pushing her to 18th place on the Race to CME Globe standings. Moreover, the bagman came out guns blazing with his golfer teammate as she managed to register 27-under 261 to take home the title of CME Group Tour Championship.

Well, such a result is not surprising owing to the amount of experience that both of them boast on the greens. The LPGA Tour pro coupled with her looper, who himself was a professional golfer, was nothing short of an unstoppable force on the course.

Meierling’s career as a golfer and a caddie

The ex-pro turned pro in 2001. He played for close to 10 years on the professional circuit. The German was introduced to the sport when he was around 12 years old and has been interested in golf ever since. However, after a decade or so of playing the game, he was asked by none other than Michelle Wie West to help her out with the bags for a few tournaments.

Well, even Meierling would not have guessed at that point in time how it would become a full-time job later on in his life. He changed his job from an athlete to a looper completely after 2016 and has since then, been caddying for the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Yang’s caddie made the decision as he couldn’t take it to the next level owing to the extreme competition in the game. When West asked for his help for a few events, he agreed to do so for the experience since he wanted to train other athletes in the future and “wanted to see how the girls do it.”

And, when he started carrying the bags, the looper realized how it had the same amount of competitiveness as when he was playing golf. “You want your player to do well. You go through the same emotions and everything. Except for not hitting the shot,” all the while pointing out how similar both the jobs were.

If one were to ask what drew the South Korean pro’s caddie into the game, he would point out the uniqueness of the sport. In an exclusive interview, he mentioned how every tournament differs from the other in the game and the athletes would always be playing on a different course each time. This, in turn, leads to a different set of challenges during each event.

The Yang-Meierling duo will look to push on with the momentum and garner much more success in the future. One thing is for sure, the South Korean professional has found a reliable partner in the German looper, who would help her on the course and support the pro in case of any setbacks.
