Can Rory McIlroy pull off another miracle at East Lake, or is his time at the top over?

Only five more days, and the 2024 PGA Tour FedExCup season will come to an end. After playing the toughest of the field and through the ups and downs of the season, 30 golfers secured the top positions in the FedExCup Standings and booked their tickets to East Lake.

The $100 million event, though, will crown only one as the winner with the coveted trophy and a $25 million winner’s payout. While there is still time for the event to start, the golf world has spoken and given its best odds for who could be the winner of the 2024 TOUR Championship. [Next to their names are the odds and scores they’ll start the event with].

1. Scottie Scheffler, +110 (-10):

This is the third year in a row that Scottie Scheffler is heading to the TOUR Championship after leading the FedExCup Standings. In the past two editions, the world no. 1 lost the 10-stroke head start at East Lake. And now, after a forgetful T33 at the BMW Championship, Scheffler did not look promising. But he had the highest odds of +110, as Sports Illustrated reported.

But this has been the greatest season so far for him, with six wins, including a second green jacket and PLAYERS Championship. The 27-year-old is a fans’ favorite to win the TOUR Championship and hopefully not become prey to newly renovated East Lake.

2. Xander Schauffele, +240 (-8):

Xander Schauffele was always known as the “outstanding golfer without a major,” and he took that to his heart and broke that notion apart by bringing in two major championships (the Open and the PGA Championship) under two months. The 2-time major winner is the only one who has been alluded to as a tough competitor to Scheffler. And the two are neck-to-neck in the PGA Tour Player of the Year race as well.

The world no. 2 was a runner-up at the St. Jude Championship and finished T5 in Castle Pines last week. As he seems to be in the best form these days, it would not be wrong to assume that Xander Schauffele may take home the coveted Tiffany & Co. trophy.

3. Hideki Matsuyama, +1000 (-7):

In the last three weeks, Hideki Matsuyama has been a force to be reckoned with. At first, he earned the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Then, the Japanese pro followed it up with a victory at the St. Jude Championship. Furthermore, he was second after the opening round of the BMW Championship. But because of his lower back pain, he had to withdraw prior to the second round.

As Matsuyama has been consistently given his best, the TOUR Championship will be another challenge he might just conquer.

4. Ludvig Aberg, +1800 (-5):

Ludvig Aberg has not tasted another PGA Tour victory since the 2023 RSM Classic. But that doesn’t mean that he has not been performing exceptionally in the 2024 season. The 24-year-old was a runner-up three times this year, including at the Masters and at the BMW Championship. Despite having a nosebleed, Aberg was deterred and showed that he was the toughest in the top 50.

All in all, the Swede pro has been playing over the top in almost all the events in 2024 except for a few mishaps. And has come out as one of the best players of the season. Despite the delay, the second PGA Tour victory seems just around the corner for Aberg.

5. Rory McIlroy, +1800 (-4):

Rory McIlroy would not have expected his 2024 season to turn out as it did. Neither he could win another major nor could win more than one individual event. His last lone victory was at the Wells Fargo Championship, and since then, the top position has eluded the 4-time major winner. But McIlroy had a turnaround at the BMW Championship and managed to finish T11, better than the T68 he concluded at the TPC Southwind.

Even after having an ordinary season, the Ulsterman is more favored than the 25 pros in the field to win the TOUR Championship. Why you ask? Because McIlroy heads into the season finale as 6th on the FedExCup Standings, the same as when he won it in 2022. What a coincidence it would be that he buckles up, wins it for the fourth time, and creates history.
