The last leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs will commence on 24th August, Thursday, and the golf world couldn’t be more excited to witness the eventful game at the Atlanta East Lake Golf Club course. With Lucas Glover and Viktor Hovland grabbing wins at the previous two FedEx cup playoff legs, one PGA Tour pro isn’t satisfied with the gameplay format. Xander Schauffele might want to change one thing about the championship.

The former 2017 winner of the same event had some interesting concerns regarding the $75 million worth Tour Championship, and felt that it is still not a finished product.

Schauffele will tee off on Thursday with the score of -3. He is tied at the 11th position with four other players. But he is not a fan of the ranking format in place for the championship, and apparently sees a scope for some improvement. When asked by a reporter about his experience of seeing staggered strokes for the past five years, the PGA Tour pro had an intersting take to deliver.

A snippet of it was posted as an Instagram reel where he said: “I still believe that when I talk to some friends, they still feel slightly confused about how it happens. I think this is supposed to be our most important event all year. It kind of comes down to this moment. And, like, for people to be a little bit confused, it’s still not a finished product to me in that sense.” The post’s caption read, “It’s time to change the staggered stroke @tourchampionship format.”

Xander Schauffele also thinks, though, that after Thursday or Friday, everyone forgets how the game started. All they remember is what is happening in the moment, and where the leaderboard stands. So, no one ends up remembering who was behind whom.

For isntance, the World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, will start at one under, while Viktor Hovland sits at eight under. And the defending champion, Rory McIlroy, stands at third at seven under. Schauffele himself admitted to not knowing the scoring until his pre-tournament press conference.

What is the staggered start system?

There is a total of $75 Million up for grabs. Players down to the 30th place take home a designated amount. It continues to use the FedEx Cup starting strokes as part of its format. The format was first changed and introduced in 2019. As per it, the golfer in the top position starts the game at ten under, which this year would be Scottie Scheffler. It basically gives the players at the top an advantage over the others.
