Justin Thomas missing the BMW Championship—Is this the biggest shock of the PGA Tour season?

At TPC Southwind this week, the fate of the top 50 PGA Tour players will be decided. The leading 50 on the FedExCup Standings after the conclusion of the St. Jude Championship will move forward to the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club. While world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, and Rory McIlroy are promised to be part of the field, there are many who may unfortunately miss the BMW Championship.

Missing to find a spot in the top 50 will end their season at TPC Southwind and put their chances of participating in the $160 million worth of eight signature events in the 2025 season in doubt. Here are the top 3 shocking names who you may not see play in the BMW Championship in a week!

1. Jordan Spieth

The 2024 season for Jordan Spieth has been memorable, but not the way he’d hoped. The 30-year-old has struggled to find his way into the winner’s circle and has only managed to get three top-10s so far. Even in the majors, he missed the Masters cut and with the lone T25 at the Open Championship, Spieth finished outside of the top 40 in both the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. His poor form resulted in him being ranked 43rd on OWGR and 64th on the FedExCup Standings. As he stands outside of the top 50, Spieth will need to finish in the top 4 to qualify for the BMW Championship.

If he fails to do that, the 30-year-old will miss the first-ever BMW Championship since the 2020 season. Additionally, missing out on the event would also signify losing out on signature events next, which he wouldn’t be able to enter even with the top 30 OWGR criteria. Will Spieth strike a miracle or will he, like in previous weeks, finish at the bottom of the leaderboard? It remains to be seen.

2. Viktor Hovland

It is like Viktor Hovland’s form has been flipped to 2023. Last year, the Norwegian pro won the BMW Championship and the season-ending TOUR Championship. However, Hovland has struggled to even enter the top 50 on FedExCup Standings and get a chance to defend his title at the Castle Pines GC. From winning three times in 2023 to carding a single top 10 at the PGA Championship, the 26-year-old’s FedExCup Standings rank has dropped to 55th. To step up five places, the 6-time PGA Tour winner would need a second-place finish at the St. Jude Championship.

In his last three starts, Hovland missed a cut once and finished T46 at the Scottish Genesis Open and T30 at the Olympics. Seemingly, it would be a challenge for the 26-year-old to turn around his game and be in the top places. But that is the need of the hour and world no. 7 will have to put out his best performance.

3. Min Woo Lee

The 2024 season was the official debut of Min Woo Lee on the PGA Tour and he was expected to cook at most events! However, things didn’t turn out as predicted. The Aussie pro relentlessly tried to enter the winning circles, but he was shot every time and finished outside the top 10 in the 14 events out of the 16 he played. In the other two, Lee was a runner-up but couldn’t capitalize on a win.

In the end, he ended up 63rd on the FedExCup Standings and has been on the verge of missing his first BMW Championship as a PGA Tour member. Moreover, after missing the cut at the Wyndham Championship last week, Lee’s chances of making it into the top 50 look grimmer than ever.

But these are not the only players who may miss the BMW Championship. South Korean prodigy, Tom Kim, and 2-time PGA Tour winner, Matt Fitzpatrick are in the top 50 but as the St. Jude Championship changes the standings, they might end up out of it and miss playing at Castle Pines GC. Who will turn out their best games to get a chance for next week’s BMW Championship? Stay tuned to find out!
