The 2025 Farmers Insurance Open has been a roller-coaster ride so far. The first round of the event saw Ludvig Aberg dominate the course in sublime fashion and finish at the top of the table. He managed to 9-under par 63 with 8 birdies and an eagle. But he couldn’t replicate the form on the second day. Although, he was not the only one. The entire field found it challenging to hit a single accurate stroke in the 2nd round. The reason? 30 mph of wild fury.
The Torrey Pines Golf Course was cursed with its infamous strong windy conditions on Thursday. That meant that players couldn’t judge the movement of the ball once it was airborne. While Ludvig Aberg was still able to sustain the wild weather, there were a few who couldn’t manage it. Here are the top 5 players who didn’t make the cut beyond the second round of the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open.

Justin Rose
Justin Rose had an average first round in Torrey Pines Golf Course. He managed 5 birdies, but the 2 bogeys limited him to 3-under par 69. However, he was nowhere close to missing the cut. The former U.S. Open champion is experienced enough to get out of tight spots and rise up the rankings. Unfortunately, the strong wind didn’t do him any favors as he fell prey to the wayward conditions. He ended round 2 with 8-over par 80 and finished the tournament with +5 below the cutline.
Shane Lowry
Just like Justin Rose, Shane Lowry is also quite an accomplished and gifted golfer. He dominated the Dunluce Course in Northern Ireland against a formidable field to win the 2019 Open Championship with a 6-stroke lead. Unfortunately, the Irishman couldn’t replicate that on the second day of the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open. Lowry didn’t perform exceptionally well in the tournament. But the 5-over par 77 was enough to make him miss the cut. He ended the tournament with +3, two strokes shy of qualification.

Tony Finau
Tony Finau is one of the best players in the world at the moment. The world no. 27 came off an incredible season that was filled with a bit of misfortune. He made 20 of the 22 cuts, with 1 runner-up and 4 more top-10 finishes. Finau also came incredibly close to winning the 2024 U.S. Open, ending at T3, 2 strokes shy of Bryson DeChambeau. But he couldn’t leverage his amazing form to get him out of the pickle at the Torrey Pines Golf Club. After ending the first round at par, Finau played a 5-over par 77 on day 2 to get knocked out of the tournament.
Max Homa
Max Homa probably had the worst tournament of the bunch mentioned here. He didn’t particularly have a great first round which ended with 5-over par 77. Things only got worse as he added 4 more bogeys to his list in the windy round 2. Homa tapped out of the tournament after 15 holes as he saw no chance of making a comeback from +9. He would have still finished the round had the breeze not frustrated him with every stroke.

Matthieu Pavon
What was a fairy tale for Matthieu Pavon a year ago, turned into one of his worst nightmares in 2025. Pavon was the defending champion coming into the tournament as he had won the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open. It was no ordinary win as well, as the 32-year-old captured the first PGA Tour title of his career. He also became the first Frenchman to win a PGA Tour title. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a particularly great start to the tournament to show any promise. Pavon finished the first round with 1-over par 73 as he prepared for day 2. The wind didn’t do him any favor as well as he went 8-over par 80 this time. That meant that Matthieu Pavon ended the tournament with +9, nowhere close to the cutline and round 3 qualification.
There are a few others who would have also made this list like Matt McCarty, Daniel Berger, and Austin Eckroat; who had just come off 2 wins in 2024. However, on any other day, these players exiting would have surprised us. But on the 30 mph windy second day at Torrey Pines Golf Course, anyone would have been at risk of missing the cut.
