Did Justin Thomas deserve his spot, or did others get unfairly snubbed from the Tour Championship?

The PGA Tour’s 2024 season will finally come to an end at the TOUR Championship played at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a tough battle for the PGA Tour pros all season to perform at the top of their games and make it into the top 30 of the FedExCup standings. As evident, many had to face disappointment.

Even Justin Thomas was at the risk of missing the TOUR Championship, but a T39 finish saved him, placing him 30th in the FedExCup standings and securing a berth at the season-ending event. However, not everyone could make it, and here are the top five who will not be playing at East Lake next week.

Brian Harman

The 2024 season has not been forgiving to Brian Harman. After a disappointing T50 at the St. Jude Championship, the 1-time major winner was no different at the BMW Championship either. Improving just a little, he finished 25th on the leaderboard, which was not enough to catapult him into the top 30 for the TOUR Championship.

He finished the FedExCup season at 31st, only 29 points from Justin Thomas, and missed the chance to make it to East Lake for the $100 million prize purse waiting for the top 30. He will miss it for the first time since 2021.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick was 36th in the FedExCup standings before the BMW Championship started and only needed to finish in the top 15 to get himself a ticket to the TOUR Championship. But he failed to do that, and after four rounds of 74-71-71-70, he finished 1-under 287 to be tied for 28th. This finish dropped him in the standings to 40th and out of the TOUR Championship race.

Did Justin Thomas deserve his spot, or did others get unfairly snubbed from the Tour Championship?

Have an interesting take?

Jason Day

It would be an understatement to say that Jason Day’s 2024 season had mixed results. There were a total of four top-10 finishes, but the BMW Championship was not one of them. After a T22 at TPC Southwind, the Aussie pro settled for T33 at Castle Pines Golf Club. And as Keegan Bradley won the BMW Championship, the standings drastically changed. From 25th to 33rd, the 13-time PGA Tour winner’s season ends before the TOUR Championship.

Cameron Young

For the second year in a row, Cameron Young will miss the TOUR Championship. Although this was one of the best seasons he had, with eight top-10 finishes including a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship, the FedExCup Playoffs were brutal for the 27-year-old pro.

At the St. Jude Championship, Young was T61, and then at the BMW Championship, he failed to break the top 10 and finished at T43. A better performance would have allowed him to jump from 39th in the standings, but he fell to 44th and missed the chance at the $100 million prize purse.

Nick Dunlap

There was a glimmer of hope when Nick Dunlap was inside the top 15 after three rounds of the BMW Championship. His 48th rank in the FedExCup standings would have changed considerably if the 2-time PGA Tour winner had maintained his performance. But he didn’t and entered this list. After a high-end T5 at TPC Southwind, Dunlap was T31 at the BMW Championship after carding even par, and his rank dropped one spot to 49th. In his rookie year, he will miss the TOUR Championship but might win Rookie of the Year after bagging two victories in a season.

Many more pros missed the 2024 TOUR Championship, including 6-time PGA Tour winner Max Homa, 2023 Rookie of the Year Eric Cole, and Will Zalatoris, who made his return in the 2024 season. Out of all the names, who will you miss more at the TOUR Championship later this week? Share it in the comments.
