Can Rory McIlroy dominate the BMW PGA Championship, or will another star steal the spotlight?

This year marks the 20th edition of BMW being the title partner of the BMW PGA Championship. The DP World Tour flagship event is scheduled to be hosted at the Wentworth Club in England from September 17 to September 22. The event is not just a regular golf tournament but is used as a source for supporting various charities and raising money for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).

The 2024 BMW PGA Championship will be the regular 144-player field with some of the top names of the DP World Tour who will fight for €9,000,000. Here are the top players who could emerge victorious based on how they have performed this season.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy had a great opening to the 2024 season with a successful Rolex Series title defense in Dubai. He must be eager to have a better record at the BMW PGA Championship. McIlroy carded a 65 in the final round at the 2023 edition and finished tying for the seventh position. He ended the year rising on top of the Race to Dubai Rankings for the fifth time and was once again crowned the European No. 1. This year too, he won 2 titles on the PGA Tour, making him one of the stars of the BMW PGA Championship.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing at the BMW PGA Championship, and I’ve had some great results round the West Course in the past. Wentworth is a place where I would like to add another title,” said the World No. 3.

Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood became the DP World Tour Global Ambassador in June this year. He also lifted the trophy of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship two years in a row (2017 and 2018) and won the 2017 Race to Dubai, adding another feather to his cap that year. The 11X DP World Tour winner bagged the silver medal at the Paris Olympics this year, right behind Scottie Scheffler, who won gold.

Have an interesting take?

Last year, he finished in the sixth position having shot 14 under in the tournament. “It’s always a privilege to be part of the DP World Tour Championship, especially on a course as iconic as the Earth Course,” said Fleetwood.

Robert MacIntyre

The 2024 season has been a roller coaster ride for Robert MacIntyre. He bagged two titles on the PGA Tour. The Scotsman had to withdraw from the BMW Championship on the PGA Tour after two rounds due to lower back pain, but on the Tour Championship, he finished 17th. He also bagged a T5 at the Amgen Irish Open with a 4-under. This weekend, MacIntyre will be making his debut at the BMW PGA Championship and hoping to come out victorious on the first try.

Aaron Rai

Aaron Rai is currently ranked in the 22nd position on the OWGR list and has been automatically qualified to be a part of the field at the 2024 BMW PGA Championship as one of the top 80 players in the standings. The 2X DP World Tour winner is yet to give his best performance this season and is looking forward to winning at least one title. His best performance this season was at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he was T4. With so many star-studded players on the field, the question is, will he be able to bag a win at the Wentworth Golf Club this coming weekend?

Billy Horschel

The Wentworth has been a rather special course for Billy Horschel. He managed to bag the record of becoming the first American to win the most prestigious event back in 2021, since 1975 when Arnold Palmer bagged it. His wedge hit the par-5 18th hole, and the ball landed so close to the hole that he did not even have to think before giving a final tap for the ball to putt in. He finished with a 7-under 65, beating Laurie Canter, Jamie Donaldson, and Kiradech Aphinarnrat, who were all tied for the second position. He will be entering the field with the hope of getting another accolade this year.

Currently ranked 24th on the OWGR list, Billy Horschel bagged his best major finish this year, which was T2 at the Open Championship in Royal Troon. However, he missed the cut earlier in the same month at the Genesis Scottish Open, tying for the 106 position. He sure would be looking forward to winning the BMW PGA Championship.

Who won the 2023 BMW PGA Championship?

Last year, Ryan Fox defeated Aaron Rai and Tyrrell Hatton by scoring a 5-under on Sunday. They were both left one stroke behind tied for the second position. He carded eight birdies in the last thirteen holes after making a triple bogey on the third hole. This was what compensated for the front nine blunder. “It’s such an iconic tournament. To add to that history here and create some of my own is very special,” he said at the post-round presser.

The total prize money of the BMW PGA Championship last year was a whopping $9 million after a $1 million increase. Ryan Fox bagged $1,530,000 and 38 OWGR points, which skyrocketed his position to 31 after the win. He also has a two-year exemption till 2025.
