The competition is steaming up at the TPC River Highlands as the coveted 2023 Travelers Championship heads into the weekend. The event’s second day saw several big-name golfers, including 2-time major winners Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa, exiting the tournament after shockingly missing the cut.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, was another big highlight from day two. Unlike the usual, however, it wasn’t Scheffler’s impeccable ball striking or unorthodox swing that grabbed the attention of the golf world. Instead, it was an embarrassing gaffe on the major winner’s part that had fans howling with laughter.
Now, the 27-year-old has also taken to social media to react to the hilarious moment. Let’s dive in to find out more!

Scottie Scheffler takes jab at himself following embarrassing blunder
Scottie Scheffler has been in an amazing form of late. On Thursday, he entered the Travelers Championship as one of the favorites to win the title after recording four back-to-back top-3 finishes! While his run over the last 36 holes at the ongoing event has been a bit bumpy, the player has managed to lift the spirits of the golf community, albeit inadvertently.
On Friday, as the golfer teed off at the par-4 fourth hole at the venue in Cromwell, Connecticut, he ended up letting go of the club. It then hit his arm, bounced back, and hit him straight in the face. A slow-mo clip of the awkward accident was shared on social media by the PGA Tour with the caption, “Who says golf isn’t a contact sport?”
Scheffler eventually shared the video to his Instagram story, writing, “my nose took one for the team today.” It will be weeks before the golf world lets slip this blunder, and the PGAT pro taking things in stride will only lead to more amusing callbacks to the moment down the road.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Masters winner shot an even-par 70 to follow up on his 7-under-par 63 on Thursday. While an even-par score is a commendable one, the TPC River Highlands course is well-known for being a low-scoring venue, and players like Keegan Bradley, Denny McCarthy, and Rory McIlroy took full advantage of those conditions. At the end of round two, Scheffler is tied at the 22nd position and will be hoping to power his way up the leaderboard on Saturday.
Keegan Bradley, Denny McCarthy at the helm of the leaderboard in Travelers Championship
As the Travelers Championship enters its penultimate round, PGA Tour’s Keegan Bradley and Denny McCarthy are currently tied for the lead at a record 15-under 125. The score shattered the 36-hole mark of the 14-under record set by Justin Rose in 2010 and later equaled by Xander Schauffele in 2022. Former PGA Championship Bradley, who scored an opening round 62, shot a 63 on Friday. Meanwhile, McCarthy carded a 65 to follow up his first-round 60. “It’s nice, but golf tournaments aren’t 36 holes unfortunately,” said the 30-year-old McCarthy.

2019 winner Chez Reavie sits two strokes behind the tournament leaders in third place. Meanwhile, fourth-placed Eric Cole shot a 65 to get to 11 under. Rory McIlroy moved into contention for the title with a 6-under 64 and is now seven strokes off the lead. Despite the blistering round, the 34-year-old suffered a double bogey on the par-3 eighth. He had earlier aced the same hole on Thursday to record his career’s first-ever hole-in-one.
Being an elevated event on the PGA Tour, the event boasts a prize purse of $20,000,000. The winner of the Travelers Championship will get to walk home with a jaw-dropping $3,600,000 in earnings!
