The fire of the Ryder Cup is still simmering under the surface. It’s been more than a week since the infamous bust-up between Rory McIlroy and Joe LaCava grabbed everyone by the scruff of their neck and forced them to keep their eyes glued to the screen. Both parties would probably prefer to erase the memory from popular consciousness. But it is not to be so.

Despite keeping mum for the most part, McIlroy’s teammate has finally chimed in. Taking a slight dig at Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, this Irish golfer, says he wants his caddie to be a “good guy”. But exactly how good? And what are the lines that he must not cross?

Shane Lowry is a gentleman, and he wants caddie to be one as well. The Irishman’s current caddie is Darren Reynolds. Lowry split with his long-time caddie Brian Martin at the end of January. Reynolds has previously been on the bags of Paul McGinley, Paul Dunne, and Roger Chapman.

His current caddie is also a decent golfer himself. Reynolds’ handicap of 10 certainly helps Lowry in assessing the situation and the course better. But more than the caddie’s skill on the greens, two-time PGA-Tour winner values peace of mind while playing on the course.

In a video posted on X, Lowry talks about his caddie preferences. Taking a subtle dig at Joe LaCava, the six-time-DP-World-Tour winner said that when he changed his caddie in January, he needed someone who was a “good guy.” His preferred caddie is the one who can maintain equanimity in the face of adversities and also not go into a hell-raising mode when things are going in their favor. “Someone who’s gonna get you up when you’re down. Someone who’s not gonna be too emotional when things are going well.”’

Obviously, he was referring to Joe LaCava’s infamous spat with Rory McIlroy. Lowry was also seen getting into a heated argument with LaCava on the course. Ironically, it was the Irish golfer himself who held McIlroy back and prevented a further escalation later.

Lowry prevented McIlroy from storming into the USA dressing room

It started on the hole 18 after Patrick Cantlay fluttered a birdie to revive USA’s Ryder Cup bid. An exhilarated Joe LaCava apparently came in McIlroy’s way when the latter was trying to assess his putt. A verbal spat broke out between the two with Lowry joining in soon. The scuffle later spilled over to the parking lot.

McIlroy was furious. In his own words, he has never been this angry in a while. If Shane Lowry had not held him back, the Northern Irish golfer was going to school Tiger Woods’ former caddie by storming into the USA dressing room. Lowry held him back and put him in the car.

A caddie should be seen but not be heard. Lowry probably wants his caddie to follow this maxim. Even if he is heard, it must not be while having a war of words with a rival golfer. Not live on television certainly.
