Rory McIlroy is one name that sure rings a bell whenever one talks about golf. The Northern Irishman has managed to win twenty-six PGA Tour events in his fourteen seasons. Currently ranked third in the Official World Golf Ranking list, the Northern Irishman has managed to bag two wins this season, and not to forget the several times he came close to clinching the victory both on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. That’s perhaps why world-renowned coach Sean Foley just recently dubbed him ‘the ultimate natural’!
Foley, the elite coach who taught top players like Tiger Woods and Lydia Ko, sat down with J.R. Smith in the recent episode of the Par-3 Podcast and compared the journey of pro golfers with rappers. When he spoke about Rory McIlroy, he called him ‘Biggie’, of the golf world. “Rory is like Biggie because you watch the kid swing when he was nine and you know his Club was a little across the line but the rest of it’s the same you know he’s like the ultimate natural,” he said. A prime example of this in golf is McIlroy’s victory at the 2011 U.S. Open, where he dominated the tournament with a record-breaking 16-stroke victory.
That win not only solidified McIlroy as one of the most talented players in the game but also elevated him to global stardom—similar to how Biggie’s debut album, Ready to Die, catapulted him into the mainstream and made him a cultural figure far beyond just rap music. He even said, “Justin Rose, who is one of the great players of his generation, calls Rory the Unicorn which is a mythical creature.” Sean Foley even went on to talk about McIlroy’s impressive swing, comparing it with Dustin Johnson and Rose, a stated how despite the height difference, his swing surpasses them. Had he been more than 6 feet, he could have easily gone to as huge as 380 yards.

Despite all the compliments, however, the 35-year-old has been having quite a few setbacks since he started playing in the 2024 season of the DP World Tour. Take the recent ongoing Abu Dhabi HSBC rounds, for example. In the second and third rounds, he ended up carding two double bogeys and was tied for the seventh position before the final.

If he ends up bagging the title this year, which in all probability he will, the 35-year-old will match the record of the late Seve Ballesteros, and be the second player to have the most Race to Dubai wins. Leading is Colin Montgomerie with eight titles. Do you think the Northern Irishman will be able to grab this feat of victory? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
