Tiger Woods is one of those legends in the golfing community whose contributions on and off the golf course have historical significance. Aspiring golfers watch and rewatch his shots to gain perspective on playing in windy weather, flying bunkers, using off-beat tactics, and more.

But how did he get to be so dedicated so as to become synonymous with the sport? Word has it, Tiger Woods’s father, Earl, raised him under strict discipline that honed his game. Basically, he raised him as a robot. But is that true? The 82-time PGA Tour winner had a story to share.

The truth about Tiger Woods’ upbringing

The golfing community is aware that the 15-time Major winner was raised by a military man. There was a certain level of discipline in the household that did help Woods hone his focus and stability. But it is not what everyone assumed.

Back in 2020, the World Golf Hall of Famer shared his insight into his relationship with his father. “He would talk eye-to-eye,” said the golfer as reported by theopen.com. “He always wanted to make sure it was eye-level, or roundabouts. He’d never, ever want to talk down to his son.”  Tiger picked up that valuable lesson and still uses it with his children. “So we communicated and that openness and that communication is something I strive to do with my kids.”

During the conversation, the pro golfer also mentioned that contrary to popular belief, his mother was the actual disciplinarian in the family. Kultida Woods was a woman of fortitude and she inculcated those principles in her son. She employed a very straight-forward method in raising her son. “There was nothing remotely grey in her decision making, in her approach to raising me. It was either yes or no, but there were no maybes,” the PGA Tour loyalist admitted.

Both his parents had an impact in cultivating the winner mindset in the 11-time PGA Player of the Year. They each had their own influence in molding him into the person that the golf world admires so much since his debut at the 1995 Open Championship.

Tiger Woods shared a special bond with his father

Tiger Woods spoke about his relationship with his father on many occasions. He waived any misconception people had about the esteemed lieutenant colonel and shared that his “pops” was “a mentor, a guider, a leader” to him. He taught the aspiring golfer to be strong and determined but more like his best friend than his coach.

The cordial relationship between father and son inspired the pro golfer to develop his confidence at a very early age. He learnt to find success come hail or high water with a serene mind and inordinate focus.
