Over the years, Tiger Woods and golf have become one and the same. The 82x PGA Tour winner has not only showcased his immense prowess on the greens but off the course as well. Woods is not only an outstanding golfer; he is also a very successful entrepreneur — from designing golf courses to the inception of a tech-infused league. Mr. T truly believes in leaving behind a legacy that is more than birdies and bogies. A big part of creating a legacy is to protect it and it looks like Tiger Woods has also mastered that art as well.

To safeguard his business ventures from misinformation, wrongful use of his creation, and various other malpractices, Tiger Woods turned to trademark various aspects of his business. Woods put the practice in use as early as 1996, just as he was turning professional. At that time, the 20-year-old bagged an immensely lucrative deal with Nike. The golfer went on to claim patent rights over his own name — one of the first patents of the 15xmajor winner — and sow the first seeds of his coming legacy.

Tiger Woods has many patents in his name. The 15x major champion has the legal right to take action against anyone attempting to use his patented products or property without permission. With Nike and Woods allegedly parting ways, Nike would be unable to use Woods’s name on their product as he holds the patent over it. Well, his name happens to be one of the many IPs listed below:

1. Tiger Woods: In 1996, Tiger Woods made his debut and, after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship thrice, he signed a reported $40M deal with Nike. Moving forward, Woods would have his name on Nike apparel and products. To protect it, he then filed for the trademark of his name, Tiger Woods.

The trademark was filed on 4th October 1996, although it was registered four years later in 2000. The trademark can be used by Woods on various golf equipment, shoes, and clothing, gaming software, for public appearances, and on websites. The IP is held by Woods’s company ETW.Corp.

2. Tiger Jam: This was the second trademark file by ETW. corp on 24th April 1998 and was registered in August 1999. He used the trademark first in 1998 for the TGR Foundation’s live event. It is used only when Woods makes an appearance regarding a concert.

3. TW: In the coming years after the debut, Woods won his first major, the 1997 Masters. The victory had turned all the attention to the young golfer, as everybody wanted to be a part of his success story. Amidst making new apparel with Nike, Woods filed for the TW logo to appear on his Nike shoes.

The logo was registered in 2006, although the filing was done in December 2000. The trademark was done for the clothing, footwear, and golf equipment category of Woods by ETW Corp. Courtesy of which, Woods now can move from Nike and make new pairs of TW shoes with any other brand.
