If two particular entities are always vying for golf fans’ attention, they are LIV Golf and Tiger Woods’ TGL. If you follow the golf world in any capacity, you probably aren’t too surprised when these two tours come up in the same conversation. For instance, leading golfers, analysts, and insiders often engage in banter about the two. Most of this discussion relates to the viewership of the tours or the comparison between their formats.

A recent addition has emerged in the long series of the latter. Who is the leading figure this time? Interestingly, it’s Roberto Castro! If you’re not familiar with his name, let us give you a quick overview. Castro, a former PGA Tour player, now serves as the director for CapTech Ventures, TGL’s technology provider. He has watched the TGL evolve from a concept into reality, working with TMRW Sports to set up the cadence for the matches. Consequently, he has been essential in TGL’s gameplay.

During a recent appearance on Fried Egg Golf, Roberto Castro made comments that are sure to spark rumors about Tiger Woods’s TGL being a copy of LIV Golf. How? Let’s break it down. After discussing TGL’s season 1, host Andy Johnson asked Castro how season 2 would differ from season 1. Castro’s reply was intriguing: “Yeah, I think you’re gonna have some different holes, um, could have a little bit of shifting of the players…” But wait—something else came up during the discussion.

When Andy mentioned possible trades and free agency in the upcoming TGL tours, Castro smiled and immediately agreed that these changes would occur. “It’s gonna happen, eventually. I think a lot of things you see in other sports will happen, eventually. Let’s get to a steady state in season 1…” How does this relate to LIV Golf, you ask?

For the uninitiated, LIV Golf’s off-season allows player movement through free agency. The top 24 players in the standings can choose to enter free agency and be traded, while players ranked 25-48 with expired contracts automatically become free agents. These players can then decide to re-sign with their current team or negotiate with other teams. Ultimately, this system provides opportunities for players to explore new options and allows teams to reshape their rosters.

Interestingly, this is even more important after the news of the merger between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour has almost neared its completion. The talks started in 2023, and have since gained major approvals from big names like Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy, who believe this merger will bring together the best players in the world more often.

So, is TGL going to expand in the future as well, or will it absorb more ideas from LIV Golf? Well, both!

Roberto Castro says TGL will be very different in the future

Roberto’s previous comments were just a look at TGL’s future. Remember Tiger Woods’s comments about the possibility of TGL’s expansion next year onwards on February 18? Well, Roberto’s comments follow in the same manner.

What’s your perspective on:

Is TGL just a LIV Golf copycat, or is it paving its own unique path?

Have an interesting take?

When Andy asked him about the possibility of the expansion and whether it was a realistic thing for season 2, Roberto replied that he does believe that will happen. However, he added that the structural changes will take time. It is not possible to expect another building by the time 2026 TGL tour rolls around. But what about taking the games outdoor–something that LIV Golf is already doing?

Roberto replied that they have already done a lot of tests in regards to that. So will that happen? “I certainly think it’s possible over the long term as the technology improves, yeah.” With TGL’s possible developments looking more and more like LIV Golf, how do you think the golf world will react? After all, it wasn’t very kind to LIV Golf.
