Two years after withdrawing from the 2017 Masters and having three microdisectomies, Tiger Woods came back, against all odds, to win his 15th major championship. In 2024, Woods has been plagued by injuries and health struggles that have, time and again, reared their ugly heads. But as he aims for that sixth Masters crown, believing, “If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” fans are a bit skeptical about not just his chances but also his appearance throughout the event.

Woods is, by far, the most injured player in 2024. Given his recent outings on the course (which haven’t been many), the buzz around his return is as palpable as ever. But because of the same fact, despite a positive update from Augusta, that buzz is just as negative as it is positive.

There’s no doubt many are keeping a close eye on Tiger Woods’ practice sessions ahead of 2024’s first major. From what onlookers have observed, it looks like things are looking good for the 48-year-old. TW Legion, one of the avid Tiger Woods fan accounts, shared positive updates on X about Woods’ form from his recent practice round at the Augusta National Golf Course.

The tweet, divulging details about the shot he played at the 11th hole, read, “Reports are emerging from Tiger’s Monday practice round. Michael Collins reports that Tiger was ‘moving well’ and hit it to 3 feet at the 11th and ‘that old Tiger Woods hitting good shots around Augusta? Yeah, that guy’s here right now.’” It wasn’t just Michael Collins who spoke about Woods’ form.

Fellow PGA Tour professional Will Zalatoris, who battled health hiccups not too long ago, said, “He played great today.” Considering how his last Masters’ outing played out, multiple people attesting to his good form is definitely a positive sign. Looking back at his 2023 Masters, it was a total disaster. Even though the 48-year-old managed to make the cut at the ANGC, he had to withdraw from the event on Saturday due to unbearable pain in the ankle because of plantar fasciitis.

After withdrawing from the event, Mr.T was seen on the greens at the Hero World Challenge in December of that year. However, that same injury-ridden form has continued this season, with the 15-time major champion getting off to a weary start. He tried to hit the greens at the Genesis Invitational this year but had to withdraw after the first round due to the flu.

After all the last-moment withdrawals (which have disappointed his fans), the golf community is taking the positive practice update with a pinch of salt. Will he be able to make it to Sunday?

“Making the cut would be a start” for Tiger Woods at Augusta

Tiger Woods has a startling record of never missing a cut in all his 23 appearances as a pro in the Masters after he missed it in 1996, where he participated as an amateur. Currently tied with Gary Player and Fred Couples in that regard, he could set a record this time out. However, to do that, he would have to make it past the second round, and many believe that outstanding feat may not continue this year.

One of them, taking to TW Legion’s tweet, couldn’t help but take recent events and his fragile health into account and put forth their assumptions regarding Mr. T’s performance in his years Masters. “Great reporting. I give him a slim chance to make the cut, and an even smaller chance to post a 72-hole score.” Be that as it may, they couldn’t not say what they really felt about Woods, writing, “Tiger is still the🐐, however.”

While one fan gave him a slim chance to make the cut, another wasn’t as optimistic. They wrote, “He’ll be done Thursday night.” They also hinted at how the PGA Tour would be using the 48-year-old because of his popularity. Leading up to the Masters, Rory McIlroy revealed that the Tour’s TV ratings are down 20%. Considering that, the fan added, “The PGA just dragging him out for rating.”

Given the ANGC’s hilly terrain, there’s no question how taxing the walk is. With that being a major cause for concern for Tiger Woods, a user wrote, “He’s great for a round. But his body cannot compete for 4 rounds.” Echoing that sentiment, another penned, “Until he shows he can play an entire tournament week walking, not getting my hopes up. Especially those hills at Augusta.”

Woods opened up about the difficulty of navigating through the course himself. “Every shot that’s not on the tee box is a challenge,” he said. “Once we start the hole, it’s a bit of a challenge.” Most comments made it clear that many fans don’t see their favorite player finishing the Masters. Considering winning another major is still what Woods is chasing, making the cut is all-important. But will he even get there?

“Will miss the cut, but if he makes it, he won’t make 72 holes,” wrote a fan. One of them, mocking him about his withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational after having back spasms throughout the first round, wrote:

Despite the practical aspect of his physical condition, some still hope he will reach that 24-consecutive-cuts feat. One follower commented, “It’s hard to imagine him making it around this course for four days. I hope he does. Making the cut would be a start.”
