Remember the time when the legend of the golf industry Tiger Woods found himself in the middle of a brewing storm? Yes, we are talking about the time when the 82-time PGA Tour winner was thrust into the spotlight in 2023 when controversial documents got leaked. These documents were no short of explosives as they revealed a scripted rant against LIV Golf, which was allegedly written by the PGA Tour.
The bombshell took the golf world by storm when the Twitter, no X, user shared a snapshot of the 357-page lawsuit filing. The script which was crafted in June 2022 included fiery lines like “Jay Monahan is the right guy for this war” and “Do what I did: tell the Saudis to go f*** themselves. And mean it.” But Woods insisted that he had never laid eyes on it and in his defense he took it to X to express his side of the story.
“In response to the talking points memo released this weekend, I have never seen this document until today, and I did not attend the players meeting for which it was prepared at the 2022 Travelers,” Woods tweeted in response. More controversy was revealed as the PGA Tour inched closer to a massive partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) which is LIV Golf’s primary backer. And the fans were surprised to see that Woods stayed tight-lipped throughout it all. “I’m going to take some time to understand the changes and what they mean,” Woods said, without elaborating.

However, you will be surprised to know that this was not the last time something like this happened in the golf world, and just when everyone thought the PGA Tour couldn’t get any more dramatic, another controversy has taken place. The latest Golf.com tweet on X revealed the details about unqualified players sneaking into the inaugural Black Desert Championship in Utah. Ryan French of Monday Q Info broke the news and exposed a shocking loophole that has left the golf community in utter shock. Not one but four players named RJ Manke, Chris Korte, John Sand, and Riley Lewis have dodged the pre-qualifier events and have landed spots in the Monday qualifier without meeting the necessary criteria.

These players were initially disqualified from the Black Desert Championship due to a “clerical error.” But surprisingly, the PGA Tour stepped in and gave Chris Korte, John Sand, RJ Manke, and Riley Lewis a second chance. And boy, did they make the most of it. Korte and Sand shot jaw-dropping eight-under 64s and secured their spots in the championship.

“It is our first PGA Tour Monday, and he just made an error. He has done hundreds of tournaments without an issue. He just missed this one”, said Devin Dhelin, who is representing the Utah PGA referring to an insider responsible for the blunder. This big mistake has raised serious questions about the PGA Tour’s qualifying process and the fans are questioning things like can the PGA Tour truly ensures the fairness and integrity of the game.
Meanwhile, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is already under the heat over the proposed partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and this latest controversy only adds fuel to the fire. As the golf world watches, one thing is clear, the PGA Tour’s credibility is on the line.
