Woods started the foundation back in 1996, along with his father, Earl Woods. The basic idea behind setting up the foundation is to support and create community-based learning and to impact the lives of every child involved with the foundation.
Nevertheless, back in 2016, he spoke about how the 9/11 scenario changed the mission of the TGR Foundation. Woods spoke about it on ‘The Late Show’ with Stephen Colbert.

He said, “The mission initially when the impetus was to try and get more participation in the game of golf, and we tried to do that with junior Junior Golf clinics around the country. When 911 happened. If I was if I died in that, that tragic day, what would the foundation look like? Well, we wouldn’t have anything. So I went to my dad, I said, Dad, we need to change this.”
He added, “I called my dad I said, Dad, I got an idea. Why don’t we come up with a learning center? He says, okay, so I give my dad the directive. He comes back about 10 Days Later says, Okay, I got a deal. Why don’t we create this Learning Center at Dad and Miller where I played high school golf at.”
