To raise the stakes, both Hall of Famers made a number of side bets ahead of the match, with Mickelson placing a $200k bet on himself making a birdie on the opening hole. Much to Woods’ joy, Lefty missed and received a hilarious response from the 15-time Major Champion.
Tiger Woods’ epic response to Phil Mickelson losing the bet

Mickelson said, “I feel like the first hole is a great hole for me. And I believe — in fact, I’m willing to risk $100,000 that says I birdie the first hole. So that’s how good I feel heading into this match.” But much to everyone’s surprise, Tiger played clever and decided to increase the stakes by doubling the wager. And fortunately enough, the 15-time Major secured the side bet win.
Even though Mickelson lost the game’s opening wager, he went on to win the majority of subsequent side wagers and the main event against Woods. However, Tiger Woods was able to exact retribution the next year.
