The Masters Tournament held another level of excitement this year. And most of it came from Tiger Woods‘ epic return at Augusta, which unfortunately didn’t end very well for him. As fans witnessed, the golfer had to withdraw from the tournament due to an unexplained injury. However, Woods soon tweeted that he was suffering from stabbing pain due to Plantar Fasciitis.

Shortly after his exit from the tournament, Woods went through an unexpected ankle surgery. But to everyone’s surprise, it wasn’t because of Plantar Fasciitis, but something else. So the real question is – what was the actual injury that led Woods to step off the Masters field?

Woods’ professional life has been nothing less than a roller coaster ride. While all his highs were full of tournament victories, the lows often brought him down to unexpected injuries and suffering. And a similar thing happened at the Masters when the golfer had to withdraw from the prestigious event due to immense pain in his foot.

The golf world was shocked to see him suffer so much despite going through several procedures in the past for the same leg injury. But his pain just didn’t seem to end. But recently, the golfer underwent a subtalar fusion procedure at HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City and is currently recovering.

To discuss the entire situation, the Bunkered Podcast called up former PGA tour star and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Bill Mallon, to give his views on the situation. And to everyone’s surprise, his statements have led everyone to reanalyze Woods’ condition. “Watching Tiger limp in Augusta, I thought he was limping mostly from arthritis, and his foot and ankle.” the ex-golfer said. “It was sort of post-traumatic arthritis…they said it was plantar fasciitis is what they attributed to which is really more of an inflammation of a ligament on the bottom of the foot than arthritis.”

According to him, Woods’ limp pointed towards him suffering from post-traumatic arthritis instead of plantar fasciitis. And there were chances that he could have been misdiagnosed. “When I saw him limping, I said that’s got to be arthritis from the original injury. So when he had the fusion, I wasn’t really that surprised,” the golf doc added.

Even Woods revealed in a later tweet talking about the procedure and the condition that led him there. Although the golfer came out of surgery safe, it is hard to say if he’ll be able to continue playing golf again anytime soon.

When will Woods be back on the golf course?

Tiger Woods has gone through tons of surgeries throughout his life, including procedures on his back, shoulders, knees, etc. However, his recent ankle surgery might have various speculations in the beginning. But as per Mallon, “Tiger apparently had developed post-traumatic arthritis…it was causing him pain.” However, he also revealed that the golfer might not be able to play golf for another 6 months. “His tournaments for 2023 are likely over, and I would not be surprised to not see him play again until Augusta 2024.”
